every classic rock song.

always a popular opinion on a "classic rock website"

There isn't much evidence of it so far, but it's pretty odd that some people get offended and take it personally when their favourite artists/tracks etc are criticised. I don't think in 10 years of internet usage I ever read a single post on any forum that made me start to like something that I don't like, or made me dislike something that I do like...I mean it's 100% personal preference, I really love cheese, but if I read somebody on here post that they hated cheese, I'm not going to be upset or get offended by it, and it certainly wouldn't make me start to hate cheese. Anyway!

To add to my Lennon, Queen, and Joy Division, I reckon Hey Jude by The Beatles is massively over-rated, it's 2 minutes of pretty nice song, and then what at least seems to be about 3 and a half hours of inane "naaa naaa naaa na na na naaaaaaaaaaa" - just drives me do distraction, I keep thinking it's about to end, but it never does.

Agreed 100%, but there are people all over the internet that think one of the following (using the same/similar analogy):

1) you hate cheese, I love cheese, thus I hate YOU because you hate cheese.

2) you hate cheese, I love cheese, and I think you saying you hate cheese is a personal attack on ME because I love it, thus I am going to get pissy and start (or continue) a feud with you because of it. I'm certainly not going to stand for you bad talking cheese! I love cheese and YOU need to stfu with your cheese hating ways!

In my case I don't care who likes what. I care about how people approach what they don't like as far as tact on whether I respect them. That part is character over opinion. Even so, I don't play those cards openly and any comments about artists I like is dirt off my shoulder and I'm more curious about why people like or don't like things. That's the part that intrigues me. If a person actually listens to a song then they have perspective. How can I take that away from them whether they like it or not. If they make a general sweeping comment about an artists work based on something they'd only know if they invested the time into the artist work which they didn't then I'd be curious how they can make such bold statements. As far as I'm concerned I can't speak logic in music. I can only speak passion for it. That's what I focus on and I honestly can't grasp having an annoyance over any artist that is only brought to your ears by choice. Vents about music are part of things realistically but I'll always have a blind spot against vents over it. I'll be like "Why, I don't get it George? :bonk:" :heheh: When I do pick on an artist it's tongue in cheek and over the top like with Celine Dion! I'm laughing as I'm doing it and if I thought I was actually irritating a fan I'd stop. just the way I am about alienating what others have passion for.

Just my mad rant/opinion/running of the mind/bullshit

Agreed Lynch! (I think?) Actually we had a cheese thread right here...

http://www.classicrockforums.com/forum/f14/whats-your-favourite-cheese-19378/

You won't believe the death threats I got PM'd to me when I said that Lancashire Crumbly OWNED all other cheeses, especially all those disgusting American ones - which is about the only thing that makes living in the USA (when I do/have done) a bit of a problem. I think if I ever set foot in Wisconsin I'd end up on the 10 Most Wanted List.

I digress!

I love U2, but another one for me here is Sunday Bloody Sunday which is just soooo bad and overrated, and I hope to never have to hear it again Someday Bloody Someday. Apart from the fact it unfortunately became a sort of IRA recruitment anthem, with Irish fans of the band going ape and virtually burning the British flag at U2 concerts in Ireland whenever they played it, it's just incredibly hard on the ears due to The Edge's guitar being mixed too loud, and yet some other fans of U2 that I know virtually genuflect when they hear it.

Well just because I find something overrated doesn't mean I don't enjoy it :grinthumb

I'm with you on everything except for the Pink Floyd Tray. Good list, though I like Wind of Change.

Really the only time I will be offended is if I think someone is putting down my tastes for the sole purpose of getting under my skin. Thankfully I don't think we have anyone here that would do that. :)

Re: Rock's Most Overated Songs

I think overrated and overplayed can be considered one in the same IMO. Think about it, radio stations everywhere aren't going to play what everyone considers crummy songs. They're going to play the "best", or what they consider to be the best of one single artist/band, and those are the ones you'll hear the most. All of the songs on my list are both overrated and overplayed, but like I said I consider them to be the same thing.

They're not the same at all. Livin' La Vida Loca was overplayed but I don't think one critic rated it as a good song. Same with Rod Stewart's Do Ya Think I'm Sexy. Still played heavily today on "Flashback" weekends (radio) but this song usually makes critics worst song of all-time lists. And really most critics don't rate Freebird highly at all. Overplayed is one thing, overrated is another.

Re: Rock's Most Overated Songs

I don't hear "Livin' la Vida Loca" played on the radio at all anymore. Back in 1999? Sure. Now? Never, and not at the same frequency as songs like "Stairway to Heaven".

What I'm talking about is songs that have withstood the test of time and are still praised highly on the airwaves today, NOT one hit wonders or Spanish inspired pop artists who were later made even more popular by William Hung. :)
