Nothing like stirring the pot ;)

Certain songs irritate the life out of me being constantly being hailed as classics and forever on the radio/jukebox...

So here's a couple for a starters...

Lynyrd Skynyrd-Sweet Home Alabama~ their worst song yet played constantly

Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven~come on its not that good

Santana-Black Magic Woman~he didn't even write it thus an ordinary cover song at best

Re: Rock's Most Overated Songs

Dangerous thread PJC!!

There's 3 that immediately jump out at me....all of which I know are considered 'all-time classics'....

Imagine by John Lennon, apart from the soppy naive pie-in-the-sky sentiment, it's just about the dreariest thing I ever heard.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen - pompous pretentious pop-opera, it's no wonder mama just killed a man if she had to sit through this like 1,000 times whilst they recorded the damn thing.

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division - if you're ever having one of those days when everything in life seems rosy and you're on top of the world, just play this and within 30 seconds you'll feel like total shit again.

I understand that you're trying to stir the pot here and while I can't necessarily argue with your points (spare "Sweet Home Alabama" on the grounds of it's hookiness) but am I to gather from your rundown of "Black Magic Woman" that you think cover songs can't be more than ordinary?

I love Santana's cover of Black Magic Woman myself...;)

Hey Jude from the Beatles, about 3+ minutes too long for my taste.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2

And I'll agree with the OP that Stairway is a little bit on the overrated side, and not representative of Zep at their best. I wonder sometimes if it keeps people from exploring them further. I'd also add Rock and Roll to that, and All My Love... I never got the appeal of that song though I appreciate the emotion behind it.

This is a very risky thread.

For me:

Back in Black by AC/DC.

As long as people respect each other they are free to slag any song they want to in this kind of thread...I never take people disliking a song/band I love personally.
