Re: The Beatles-- Band Of The Month-- June 2010
Please Please Me
Released: March 22, 1963
The Beatles debut album, Please Please Me, was recorded in three sessions, which were on September 11, 1962, November 26, 1962, and February 11, 1963.
The album was recorded in Abbey Road Studios, in London, in Studio two, and was mixed on February 25, 1963, just about a month before its rushed release.
Please Please Me was produced by George Martin, mixed and engineered by Norman Smith, and the famous album art was done by Angus McBean.
There were several different versions of Please Please Me, meaning that they have generally the same songs and were released close to the original.
Here are some different versions:
Please Please Me UK: Parlophone PMC 1202, March 22, 1963 (mono)
Please Please Me UK: Parlophone PMC 3042, April 26, 1963 (stereo)
Introducing... The Beatles US: Vee-Jay VJLP 1062, January 10, 1964 (mono)
Introducing... The Beatles US: Vee-Jay VJLPS 1062, January 10, 1964 (stereo)
Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles US: Vee-Jay VJLP-1092, October 12, 1964 (mono)
Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles US: Vee-Jay VJLPS-1092, October 12, 1964 (stereo)
The Early Beatles US: Capitol T 2309, March 22, 1965 (mono)
The Early Beatles US: Capitol ST 2309, March 22, 1965 (stereo)
The album reached number one status in the United Kingdom, and stayed there for an entire thirty weeks, beginning on May 11, 1963.
Allegedly, the album was recorded only to capitalize on the success of the Please Please Me single in the UK. The album includes the song Theres A Place, which would show John in a theme of alienation and isolation, which would appear again in the form of Strawberry Fields Forever, 4 years or so into the future. Notably, the album also contains the song Misery, which was intended for Helen Shapiro, but she didn't like it, and the Beatles did their version.
The cover art was shot on March 5, 1963, and would be shot again in 1969 for the Get Back project. The photo, taken in a London stairwell, was actually a failed attempt at something. Angus McBean wanted to do a picture in a zoo (play on words on the name of the beatles.) However, this fell through, and what we got was one of the most iconic and well known album covers of the 60's.
The album's budget was about 700 dollars. Each member of the beatles was paid a union pay of around 60 dollars.
A fun little fact is that the songs on this album (the originals) are credited to McCartney-Lennon, as opposed to Lennon-McCartney. This is the only time in the history of The Beatles that this would happen.
Track Listing:
Side One:
I Saw Her Standing There (2:55)
Misery (1:50)
Anna (Go To Him) (2:57)
Chains (2:26)

My Rating: 7.5/10
Just a side note, you probably already figured this, but I will be making posts like this for the MAIN albums only, so no capitol releases or canadian releases, because they are really just the same thing as the others like it.
Coming Soon!
