Not seen a dedicated thread to this writer, recording wizard and studio tech genius.
He pioneered echo, reverb and many studio and sound tricks... mimicked and still used today. Above a leather handbag shop(Mrs. Shentons.) up two flights of stairs on the Holloway Road, London - the very basis of pop and rock was invented.. Ask Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, John Paul Jones, and countless others... including scores that have since passed. Steve Marriott, Jimmy Miller, Heinz, Nicky Hopkins.. et al.
Famously Telstar was cut there and Joe Meek was responsible for those sound effects... But controversy was never far away (he was convinced that EMI were keeping tabs on him to steal his techniques (turned out true) he never put a patent on his gadgets (the kids toy microphone with the wobbly spring inside, that magnifies your voice?.. that was Joe) he was responsible for inventing the compressor too.
He also had a habit of groping musicians and many 'never went for a sound check alone'. Joe was gay, and was often caught "oppurtuning" as they politely called it in the 1960s in public toilets. Pre-1967 it was illegal to be homo-sexual and following a row with his landlady (she'd heard of 'goings on')... Mrs Shenton gave him notice.. Joe shot the woman and used the other barrel on himself.... He left a fantastic legacy of early Brit-pop and sadly his demons clouded his thoughts.
I hope you guys on here will Google old Joe.. his work left a mark on music - yesterday and today.
