Ohhh, so they're backwards!

The story I always hear as to the 'origin' of the name suicide doors is becuse they open backwards, thus if you get out of your car and another car comes by and his the door, you could easily get snapped in half. the way the doors are now, you open the door and someone sideswipes the door, it goes the opposite way, thus preventing that major damage to the person getting out.

The new way is safer (presumably)
