That being said, critics sometimes get it wrong. Rolling Stone magazine rock critics consistently slammed Led Zeppelin albums when they were released. Then around the late '80 they finally backtracked and admitted that LZ was a great band and reassessed their albums. Most recieved 4 to 5 stars when previously they had only garnered 2 or 3 at best. (a case of underrating:D)
QFMFT! THE only album from the band that received FAINT praise was Physical Graffiti. It got to the point where Page did NOT want to grant an interview with the magazine during their 1975 U.S. Tour. Cameron Crowe had to talk him into it along with the rest of the group. The publication was more into who Jagger was marrying and "character" rock at the time.

The Oxford online dictionary defines 'overrated' as: an adjective meaning, 'have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved: an overrated player'. Most dictionaries, inc. OED, will define over-play as the verb, overplay, which is not helpful.

Apologies for making this verbose, but, finally, isn't this a negative thread which invites negative comments? Sorry Bruce, but couldn't one person's fun be another's inflammatory remark, especially as what constitutes 'overrated' rock songs is difficult to define?

Never did read the Oxford dictionary, something to do with a lack of pictures

The idea was not to invite negativity but to promote lively discussion, after all most people are here because of a deep love of music and from reading previous threads it was easy to see that the discussion would be intelligent rather than descending into a "bitchfest".

Overplayed versus overrated is an interesting point but then isn't it one and the same thing?

One other interesting point is the distinction regarding radio play here in the USA and the rest of the world....its fair to say that prior to moving to the USA I rarely if ever heard "Sweet Home Alabama" on the radio in the UK....it was always on the jukebox in the Beerhouse in Manchester mind....

In Peoria we have a classic rock radio station that seems to have a very limited playlist that seems to revolve around GnR's November Rain :pullhair:

Yeah you're OK R.E.... anything with too many 'F's in it on a message board is usually bad news, but you can relax

I thought so.:D

I wasn't getting upset, just not sure what it stood for. My computerspeak stops at LOL!:oyea:

There we have it. The OP himself said they're pretty much the same. :)

Now we need to start adding some more songs in here. :D

I actually also thought that BE's post was very well worded, but IMO simply out of step with general mood. When a new thread has almost 100 replies and 800 views inside a 48 hour period, it's generally an indication that people are enjoying the topic and having a lot of fun with it, and not caring too much if some anonymous typists out there somewhere thinks their favourite song is over-valued.

Threads like this usually end up going into more theoretical discussions and go a bit off topic, and it seems all it takes at times is for one or two people to question for that to happen, but it's good to see everyone being friendly and I've noticed less OT threads when there's threads like this around to keep us occupied which is a good thing. I'd rather participate in these than polls or news threads. :peek

I hate to keep being a stickler, but I don't think so.

I'll give an example the other way. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks usually ends up on almost every critics' Top 25 Albums of All Time. But quick, name one song on that album that is overplayed. There isn't one, which to me, means they aren't the same thing. Same with Springsteen's Nebraska. There are alot of critics who rate that as one of his best albums but yet nothing from that album is overplayed. In fact I've only heard one song from that album on the radio and that was awhile ago. (Atlantic City)

So I guess what I'm asking is are we talking critically overrated or fan overrated? Because, from the examples I've given in this post and my previous posts, they are completely different. And if we're talking fan overrating, then I agree, overplaying comes into the equation.

Great discussion so far no matter how we look at it.:cheers2
