Re: Nirvana & Kurt

I wouldn't dispute that but again...that pretty much sums up any band and their fan base. :grinthumb
True, but not every band had the same cultural impact that Nirvana had, and, in particular, Kurt Cobain. When they came into the music scene in 1991, it was as though they had changed everything culturally, whereas not too many bands (extremely popular or not) did the same, before or after.

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

Great band.

My favorite band.

Overrated? Yes. Nirvana's fault? No.

Is Kurt a great song writer lyric wise? Yes he was.

For better or worse they changed rock music.

The one thing I loved about Kurt was how he always gave his favorite bands more press then himself.

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

Maybe they don't mean "voice of a generation" in reference to his singing. I think calling him the voice of a generation is in reference to the fact that his ideals and feelings (through his music and outside of it) sort of spoke for that generation, like they felt and thought along the same lines as Kurt did.
That's actually a pretty ****ing scary thought, if you look at the lyrics this goofball wrote. If that's the voice of a generation and the generation had the same feelings he did through his lyrics, there are a crapton of pretty disturbed people out there.

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

Kurt got pissed when people tried to find meaning in his lyrics.

To me, that seems odd. why would a person get mad at that? It would be one thing if he was some sort of private person, and he wrote lyrics on his own, kept them in journals, notebooks, what-have-you, and someone took them and released them to the world. THAT would be worthy of getting pissed at.

However, as a popularly known recording artist whose work is widely available to the public, how do you get mad when someone says "uh, wtf does this mean"? If it were only a few people that said it, fine, blow it off. But when countless people (such as myself) call it jibberish and others say "it doesn't make sense, but it's deep", that should be saying something.

*shrug*

I dunno, I don't get it. I've listened to just about everything Nirvana has ever done and it escapes me. Some of the music in some songs is pretty decent. But the lyrics are one of the biggest disappointments to me. I don't think anything Kurt did on the guitar was ever anything special, but it worked from the style they were doing. But those lyrics, that's what I can't get past when listening to Nirvana. Some of it is pure jibberish while other stuff I find a bit disturbing.

Again .. *shrug*

(and not trying to troll the thread by any means, just giving my thoughts/opinions)

I dunno...I think media helped as well as MTV over hyped alot of it.

Hey I like KISS...but I like them better without all the hype...no one is as great as they are hyped.

So I guess what I'm saying is MTV ect. changed things culturally and used Nirvana as it's model.
