I think All The Young Dudes did so much more on a much broader stage. Mott The Hoople took a Bowie guide vocal version and reinvented it to become a song that defined a generation. I'm a dude, man!

I always thought it was a little petty that Bowie never recorded a version until the Aladdin Sane sessions. He did not record it during the Ziggy sessions for which the song was written. It seems David was not interested in recording it until after the song had been a hit for MTH. That version remained unreleased until 1995.

Lots of fun cover versions including Ozzy, Bruce Dickinson, Pet Shop Boys, Tesla, World Party and one of my faves is a punky version by The F-Ups. The fact that the song walks across genres is telling of the importance.

No disrespect for Children Of The Revolution!
