Re: Nirvana & Kurt

i have never understood how Kurtcould be a voice of a generation when he was one of the most incoherent singers after to obtain mainstream success. IMO if he was still living he would be a mainstay on celebrity rehab and make scott weiyln look like an amatuer drug abuser. His songwriting imo was nonsense because most of his lyrics didnt was oxy morons anyway, WTF does a mosquito have to to with libido

On the other hand, few people would make the connection between "Eggmen", "Pornographic Preistesses", "Elementary Penguins" and "The Walrus", yet that's hardly an argument to say John Lennon was not a voice of a generation.

Has a good style, he didn't care about the words much he cared more about a catchy guitar riff.

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

my point is as far as i know a guitar riff will never be a voice unlees u count talkbox as a voice. So how when u see anything on Kurt he is called the voice of a generation. A lot of people can mumble and sing through thier nose but are not dubbed with such a high title

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

Lyrics of rock songs are often hard to decipher for the casual listener. Nirvana's fans knew exactly what he was saying. BTW, the connection between mosquito and libido? They rhyme.:heheh:

Re: Nirvana & Kurt

There not really that popular anymore. Most people I know my age don't even know who Nirvana is. EEK!

This is interesting though...is this really true?

I think Nirvana is a better band without the label of "Voice Of A Generation" or anything like that.

If we really think about it, almost any band can be a voice of a generation if they're popular, have a fan base and those generations grew up with whatever band.

To me Nirvana was a rock band...and like most rock bands some tunes are better than others. Kurt did what he felt and did it to the best of his ability and garnered his fan base and made people happy...must have or they wouldn't have bought their cd's.

But the only exception I will give to "A Voice" of a generation would be Lennon as it wasn't about musical style...one sound....it was all in the words.

Fans sorted treated Lennon as a voice of reason or a leader...not changing or altering the style of popular music at that time...couldn't be the music as Lennon would try it all musically.

A bit of reggae,hard rock,ballads,swing,boogie,blues,pop.

It really came down to the words and his overall message regarding War,Politics and Peace....or his undying love for Yoko which can reflect in others the meaning of love un-ashamed.

For Kurt? It was really the same rock and roll message of angnst, coming of age and the confusion of growing up from your teen years and trying to find a bit of direction which can be a huge struggle.

We've heard this in Alice Cooper's I'm Eighteen and many more songs before this and after Nirvana.

It was really a change in musical style, and many thought it was killing off metal or hard rock but time has proven this to not be the case and Kurt himself , I believe had no such intentions. I don't believe Kurt Cobain was very fond of MTV's practices as the rest of the world wasn't either (or most).

IMHO I say rest in peace...he was a rocker...Nirvana was a rock band that hit it hard...it is what it is.

I agree, I don't look at Kurt and the other members as the "voice" of the generation. I just think there a really good rock band and love most of there tunes.

Maybe they don't mean "voice of a generation" in reference to his singing. I think calling him the voice of a generation is in reference to the fact that his ideals and feelings (through his music and outside of it) sort of spoke for that generation, like they felt and thought along the same lines as Kurt did.

I wouldn't dispute that but again...that pretty much sums up any band and their fan base. :grinthumb
