One of the interesting things mentioned in this thread is Ringo's having actually tuned his drums. That was something I always appreciated - the way it made the drums more enjoyable to listen to, better suited to the music, and much more three-dimensional. It seems like the standard of the day was to crank the heads down so tightly that every strike of a stick on a drum sounded like a drummer was hitting a solid block of wood instead of a resonant musical instrument. All you have to do hear that effect is to listen to any Dave Clark Five track. Even as late as the Monkees, drums were still being played and recorded that way. IMO the zenith of drum tuning was Loggins and Messina, whose drummer's name sadly eludes me at this time. Of course I don't know if the drum tuning was his doing, or that of producer nonpareil Jim Messina. At any rate, I credit Ringo for making it popular in the first place.
