This is a question for anyone who knows the song Ol' Shep by Elvis Presley.
In that song does the person kill his beloved old dog? My buddy and I had a dispute over this many years ago and it never was resolved but every time I hear the song I am reminded of it.
One of us always believed the person singing the song killed Shep by striking him. The other one of us thought Shep died of old age, and even after reading the lyrcs online still has doubts that Shep was killed by his owner. The key line in this is "I'd struck the best friend that a man ever had."
