"Hold on folks, let me get my bullet loaded."
And if that doesn't work...
In all seriousness, I've never shied away from a song or artist (music or any other form) because of their political views. If I like the song, I like the song, even if I may not exactly agree with the content.
I think the reason for this is because politics have never been of any interest to me. Left wing, right wing, liberals, conservatives, fascists, anarchists, extremists..
hut hut HIKE. I don't have any leanings, so I guess that helps me be less constrictive.
It's one thing to put your beliefs, political or otherwise, in a song, or poem or painting. Whatever your medium, and you're free to express yourself.
However, I
do have a bit of a problem with musicians going up on stage and railing against this or that or this person or that person because the artist's views differ.
I paid to hear your music, not your politics. If your politics are in your songs, fine.
Sing it, brother. If not, go on CNN to
talk about it.
This has nothing to do with freedom of speech, mind you. I just think there's a time and place for it. When I saw The Boss on the Seeger Sessions Tour (which was absolutely killer, by the way), He said something about the "Unfortunate accident down there in the White House".
Some cheers, some boos. Nothing from me. It was brief, and over, and got right back to the music.
The double standard is kind of annoying, though. The Dixie Chicks career was killed by what Natalie said about G.W., but Barbara Streisand actually had a
Bush impersonator in her show, acting like a buffoon and basically being an idiot.
Natalie Maines tosses out an off the cuff comment, and the Chicks are finished. Streisand has an obviously premeditated attack on the President, and not so much as a blurb on the news.
I'm not defending Bush, like I said, I don't care about politics. I'm just sayin', doesn't seem right to me.
The only artist I've ever boycotted is Don Henley. I'll listen to the Eagles, but none of his solo stuff, and I'll tell you why. It has nothing to do with his views on anything. I heard him in an interview discussing a new release (this was easily 25 years ago), and while talking about one of the songs, (I forget which) and it has some sort of 'message', he actually said, "Why should I give people what they want to hear? I'm going to give them what they
need to hear"
Click. Haven't listened to a Don Henley solo song since. I'll decide what I
need to hear. And it ain't Don Henley.
