But sooner or later the music has to be purchased. Without it they have to keep their day jobs and not enough income to make the product better in the future.

but without a fan base established then not enough people would buy the music to begin with. who's gonna spend $12 on a random band's cd they've never heard of if they can download it somewhere for free?

I'm with TL on this one, if something is free it will spread amongst people much quicker than something that has to be paid for. And the more people that know about a band, the more people will like the band, and more people who like the band will mean more people going to see the band live, and instead of the $20 for a CD the band would have recieved $3 from, it's $50 for a live show the band will get $20 from.

I understand that and I agree with you (to a point). My bands have myspaces set up and many websites you can sample the music. There are people now uploading the stuff to youtube and things and that doesn't bother me.

But anyway I will give you that. It's cool when people get to hear it. But for those that say bands don't make money off their CD sales in this day and age (as opposed to merch and touring)...well that depends.

All I can tell you is that I recieve 2 roylaty checks a year from my record company and also recieve checks through soundscan tallies...you know from mom & pop stores and internet legal downloads.

I'm all for folks purchasing one song that they may like. No hassles there. I'm also VERY grateful to those that do purchase. I know what causes the end result for my payments or what enables me to go to Los Angeles and gig. As well as the possible opportunity to put a bit of money back and record some new music in the future.

It seems like a cliche' thing when my favorite entertainers said things like "If it wasn't for the fans"..but now I really know what that means.

yeah i definitely hear what you're saying, in the end its just two different perspectives that clash, the musician who's affected by it and the poor college student

Right...and that's true too. But I've known alot of people that have told me they have no money to buy music and still partied alot.

I'm not just in this for myself. I'm an authentic music fan who cares for others. The size of my collection is crazy and well organized. (very anal about it).

But I'm a bigger music fan than I am of other things...so when I desire new music, I'm not going for a 12 dollar case of beer.

Rather have something that lasts forever than something I'm just gonna puke up that night or the next day.

Buying music is not a waste of money for me.

^^I have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on music and the equipment to play it on over the years.

I never consider it a waste of money to buy CD's of an artist I like. I also will use all the avenues available to me to check out a new band before I buy anything. It's no different than listening to the FM radio stations in the old days, the packaged CD will sound better than any lossy download anyway, just like an old vinyl record sounded better than the tapes we made of FM radio stations back in the day. We paid a levy on all blank cassettes as well, a portion of which was supposed to end up in MP's pocket...well maybe not MP but you get the idea.

its not for me either, but compared to eating and staying healthy, then yeah its considered a little more of a waste of money, at least to me

I just wanted to say that when I was a poor college student I did not buy records nor did I have anything to play them on. It was radio radio radio.

This right here is what drives me nuts. Not just about music but about games and other things. There are people that I've known that say they can't afford games, music, etc, yet 6 nights a week are sitting in a bar getting drunk, smoking a pack or two of cigs a day, etc. there's a difference between "can't afford" and "don't feel like paying for". VERY big difference!


I'm not holier-than-thou when it comes to downloading. however, the majority of stuff I've grabbed over the years is stuff that is either very hard to get, or I DL and listen. If I don't like it, I don't keep it. If I do like it, I'll typically buy it. I can test drive a car, but not a CD. Silly.

WTF? You can buy a case of beer for 12 bucks in Chicago!? I know where I'm moving to next.

Yeah I was going for the cheep beer as an example. And yeah that's what I was talking about Lynch. I was referring to "music fans" who say they have no money to buy music, but will spend that EXTRA cash on beer,smokes ect.

This "extra money" is after more important things are taken care of, of course. You know, like bills and food.

Everyone has a little extra money from time to time and it's up to that person how they wish to spend it.
