This Day In Rock History: April 25th


1974 Pamela Susan Courson, Jim Morrison's longtime companion, was found dead in her Hollywood apartment. She was 27 years old, the same age Morrison was when he passed away in 1971. The plaque where her ashes were interred at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California reads "Pamela Susan Morrison 1946-1974", even though "Morrison" was never a part of Courson's legal name.

1992 Brian McLeod, guitarist and backing vocalist for Chilliwack, died of brain cancer at the age of 39. The Vancouver, Canada band is most often remembered for their 1981 hit, "My Girl (Gone, Gone Gone)".

1946 Ronnie Gilbert (bass guitarist for Blues Magoos) is born.

1950 Steve Ferrone (drummer for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Average White Band) is born in Brighton, England.

1955 David Sikes (bass player for Boston, Giuffria) is born near Cambridge, England, but will be raised in California.

1988 Bon Jovi's manager Doc McGee was convicted on drug offences arising from the 1982 seizure of 40,000lb of marijuana smuggled into north Carolina from Colombia. McGee was sentenced to a five year suspended prison term and a $15,000 fine.

1990 The Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix played at the Woodstock festival was auctioned off for a record $295,000. His two-hour set at the 1969 festival became the longest of his career.

On this day in 1917, Ella Fitzgerald, the Queen of Jazz, was born in Newport News, Va. Fitzgerald is one of the most renowned jazz singers in history, thanks to her warm, sweet voice and signature scatting technique. She first sang publicly at the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night, where the crowd warmly received her rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Judy.” Within a couple years, she had started touring with Chick Webb and had released songs on the Decca label. Throughout her career, Fitzgerald released hits including “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” “Dream A Little Dream,” and “Someone To Watch Over Me.” She performed alongside stars including Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra and Count Basie. Fitzgerald died in 1996 after being diagnosed with diabetes and undergoing multiple major surgeries.

1923 - Blues guitar legend Albert King was born. One of 13 children, he was born Albert King Nelson in Indianola, Miss., and his family moved to Arkansas when he was eight years old. King made his first guitar out of a cigar box, a branch from a shrub, and a strand of broom wire; he later bought a real guitar for $1.25. He learned to play it himself, left-handed with the strings upside down. He developed a distinct, powerful string-bending style and would become known as one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with B.B. King and Freddie King). Also admired for his soulful, smoky vocals, Albert King is probably best known for his 1967 single, "Born Under a Bad Sign." King died of a heart attack at home in Memphis, Tenn., in 1992. He had played his last show two days earlier, in Los Angeles.

2019 - Molly Hatchet singer Phil McCormack died, age 58. He'd fronted the Southern rock band since 1996 after having performed with them previously, taking over from Danny Joe Brown.

1978 The Last Waltz, director Martin Scorsese's acclaimed documentary of The Band's star-studded last concert, opens in theaters. The film features performances by Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, The Staple Singers and Dr. John.

1967 16 year old Janis Ian sings "Society Child" on the CBS-TV show, Inside Pop - The Rock Revolution. A year before, the song was banned by many radio stations because of its interracial love affair theme. Following her television appearance, the record shot into the US Top Twenty.

1967 Mama Cass Elliot gives birth to a daughter she names Owen Vanessa. She never told anyone who the father is, but many years later Michelle Phillips helped Owen locate her biological dad. Owen grew up to become a singer as well and toured with Beach Boys member Al Jardine

1975 B.J. Thomas not only reached the top spot on both the Cash Box Best Sellers list and the Billboard Hot 100, he also set a record for the number one song with the longest title with "Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song". The tune was not a hit in the UK.

1943 '70s rock singer Gary Wright is born in Cresskill, New Jersey.

1960 Roger Taylor (drummer for Duran Duran) is born in Nechells, Birmingham, England. He remains with the band until their performance at the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia in 1985 - but rejoins a decade later.
