1950 Peter Frampton is born in Beckenham, Kent, England. After forming Humble Pie, he finds success as a solo artist; his 1976 album Frampton Come Alive! is one of the most successful live albums of all time.

1966 Kimberley Dahme (rhythm guitarist, bassist for Boston) is born.

1985 Prince releases his seventh album, Around The World In A Day. It's his first issued on his Paisley Park imprint and primarily recorded at his Paisley Park studios.

1978 The Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) make their debut on Saturday Night Live, later becoming the first characters from the show to get their own movie.

2010 Poison lead singer Bret Michaels suffers a brain hemorrhage that nearly kills him. After almost two weeks in intensive care, he makes a full recovery. Throughout the ordeal, he leaves his headband on, explaining, "If I'm going out, I want to go out rocking."

2013 Richie Havens, who rose to fame as the opening act at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, died following a heart attack at the age of 72. During his lengthy career he scored just one Billboard Top 40 hit, a cover of George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun", which reached #16 in 1971.

1966, “Wild Thing” by The Troggs (who were originally called The Troglodytes) was released in the US on both the Atco and Fontana labels. The song went on to reach number one. Fronted by Reg Presley, “Wild Thing” became a major influence on garage rock and punk rock. The original version was written by Chip Taylor in 1965 with his New York based group The Wild Ones.

1969, In Dolton, England, the Who perform their rock opera Tommy live in its entirety for the first time.

2008, It was revealed that ’60s singer Tommy Steele took Elvis Presley on a secret tour of London in 1958 after Presley struck up a friendship with Steele. When the rock legend flew into London for a day, Steele apparently took him round the city, showing him famous landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament. For more than 50 years, Presley fans had believed the only time Elvis ever set foot in the UK was during a stop-over at Prestwick Airport in Scotland in March 1960.

1957 Elvis Presley had his custom built 'Music Gates' installed at Gracelands. The gates were designed by Abe Saucer and custom built by John Dillars Jr, of Memphis Doors inc.

1964 The President of The National Federation Of Hairdressers offered a free haircut to the next No.1 group in the UK pop charts. He said The Rolling Stones are the worst, one of them looks as if he's got a feather duster on his head.'

1960 Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark is born Stephen Maynard Clark in Sheffield, England.

1971 The Rolling Stones released their classic album Sticky Fingers in the UK. The band's first release on their own label via Atlantic Records, the cover was designed by Andy Warhol, who was paid $15,000 for his efforts. The LP sleeve featured a close-up of a pair of jeans with a working zip. Widely assumed to be that of Mick Jagger, the crotch photographed for the cover was actually that of actor Joe Dallesandro.

2012 American country rock bass guitarist Chris Ethridge died age 65 from pancreatic cancer. He was a member of the International Submarine Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Ethridge also worked with Nancy Sinatra, Leon Russell, Delaney Bramlett, Johnny Winter, Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Jackson Browne, and Willie Nelson.

2002 - Wilco released Yankee Hotel Foxtrot on Nonesuch Records. The release was not without controversy - the band made the album in 2001 but Reprise Records, a Warner Music Group label, refused to release it. Then Wilco left the label, got the rights to the album, and released it for free on their website. Wilco signed with Nonesuch Records (another Warner label) in November of that year, and the album was officially released on April 23 of 2002. It is Wilco's best-selling work, having reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 chart.

1971 The Rolling Stones release their 11th US studio album, Sticky Fingers.

1976 The Rolling Stones release their 15th US studio album, Black And Blue.

1988 Enjoying a comeback as interest in his music surges, Roy Orbison celebrates his 52nd birthday at a Bruce Springsteen concert in Los Angeles, where Bruce brings him onstage so the crowd can sing him "Happy Birthday." Orbison dies that December of a heart attack.

2016 Bruce Springsteen salutes the recently deceased Prince by opening his show in Brooklyn with a rendition of "Purple Rain" (Nils Lofgren takes the guitar solo). The E Street Band wears purple for the show, deviating from their usual black.
