No I wouldn't, they are a titanic hard rock band that can do any kind of rock song and pull it off, but they never struck me as a "proto-metal" band.

I would say since Queen appeared in music, proto-metal lost its own feel.

The first two, definitely. The harder stuff on the third and a few songs on the fourth, another yes. Metal has Jazz, Opera, Classical, Blues and any other number of other musical styles mix in and through out so the harmonies and the opera are not a hindrance, IMO. Proto metal is basically just a modern term to describe the harder rockin' and or heavier bands of old that helped to bring about metal through their influence. Queens early stuff definitely qualifies under that definition.

Just about every 40 and older Metal musician I know has at least Queen II in their collection

No...

but, if they were? maybe that would help explain why I don't like ''heavy metal'' too much. :)

Now, was Kiss was proto metal?...that would be a good question.

Arguably they are considered as early metal in US. As in overall they are still far away from metal that Sabbath and Purple started to shape.

Well, Sabbath, Purple and even Zeppelin are Proto Metal types, that a given...

I think Kiss influenced a lot of heavy metal musicians, all around the globe - good or bad, that's up for debate.

Kiss was a ''world wide'' phenomenon in the mid - late 70's...

But I agree, the large part of Kiss' fanbase was here in the U.S., the same way Queen's largest fan base was over there in England.
