Yeah,I was recently watching interviews with the other Floyd members and the biggest thing they all had in common was they all agreed that over exposure to LSD and other substances virtually ruined his career.Well at least we got his contributions to "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" first..........

Great quote about Syd by Nick Mason in the latest edition of 'Classic Rock' - "When we started out we all wanted to be pop stars.........except Syd". The funny thing is Syd was the only one of them who could ever have made it as a pop star. He had the looks and image and he could write a catchy tune. Couldn't see the girls swooning over Nick, Roger and Rick :gig

They were going out of their way to try to groom him into being a pop star. It might be one of the reasons the eventually flipped out.

While I do understand that "Wall" and DSOTM along with "Wish You Were Here" are heralded as FLoyd's finest works,I myself, and I'm not alone here, actuallly prefer earlier more pure psych-rock Floyd.Of course, one of the reasons is I've been bombarded by the tracks from the three aforementioned albums so much,I've grown a bit tired of them.Mostly recently,I've been listening to "Saucerful of Secrets" and I'd like to get the "More" soundtrack probably on CD,but no matter what format I get it in,I'm afraid I've all but scratched up my vinyl copy. That aside,"More" and "Secrects" create their own little microcosms that for me are a bit more adventurous that their greater known works.

Agreed. As much as I absolutely adore Animals, WYWH etc., there's something magical about Saucerful particularly and More... even Obscured. That whole era between Piper and Meddle is quite interesting.

don't expect too much. There are flashes of brilliance but a lot is hard to listen to because you know he was just deteriorating mentally at the time. And it shows.

Brilliant Syd songs, for me are: Dark Globe, Gigolo Aunt, Vegetable Man, baby Lemonade, Octopus, Dominoes, It's No Good Trying...

From those, I only know Vegetable Man. Found it a bit funny/goofy to listen to. Haven't heard it in years!

So true! :gig Waters and Mason are not exactly good looking. Wright looked okay. Gilmour probably looked better than him. But Syd looked like a pop star, really! Late 60s Syd reminds me of a modern day Brandon Flowers from The Killers.

Okay I want to talk about Animals again. What a fantastic album it is from start to finish! Not a weak moment in it whatsoever.

And it's got some of their greatest lines ever...

And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around

Brilliant!

Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

Meek and obedient you follow the leaders down well-trodden corridors into the valley of steel

And this great line here...

Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream

But I want to know what it means exactly. It sounds great in the song but can anybody shed some light on what that last line means?

Sometimes in order to really hear Floyd lyrics, you really have to be paying particular attention to them. The way many of their tunes were written, the words are a bit obscured by the music, but when you can hear them, they are indeed among the finest lyrics ever.Throughout their heyday, they had a lot to say about life and the establishment and said it usually quite passionately and in some cases very eloquently...........

I think you would have to ask Roger what the lyrics mean MW,,,and in many songs the writers themselves leave things obscure on purpose.

I agree, what a fantastic lyric and such a powerful image. I'm with you on the álbum as well.

In the context of the song (soon after the altered version of Psalm 23 which explains how the sheep, representing the 'ordinary people' will rise up against their oppressors, i.e. the dogs and/or pigs) in conjuction with the 'bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream' line I take this part to mean that the sheep get their revenge on their overlords by finally rebelling against their orders rather than simply doing as they are told (a path which results in them being converted to lamb cutlets) - the masses of sheep attack and manage to kill the dogs, but this is no good because the pigs are the ones with the ultimate control, not the dogs.

Like LG though, if you wanted to be sure you'd have to ask Roger Waters (I can't remember hearing or reading any detailed explanation of the meaning behind Sheep unfortunately, but I'm sure there must be something somewhere).

Interesting take, Jonny! Thanks for that. It's funny I never paid much attention to the psalm section of the song really. So only today I noticed mentions of lamb cutlets and what not! Ol'Roger did have a sense of humour too! :gig
