If I had to attempt ranking the albums, maybe it would look something like this...

1 - 5
The Dark Side Of The Moon
Animals
Wish You Were Here
The Division Bell
The Wall

6 - 10
A Saucerful Of Secrets
Meddle
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Atom Heart Mother
A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

11 - 14
Obscured By Clouds
More
Ummagumma
The Final Cut

But it is so difficult to rank some of these! On some days I prefer Wish You Were Here to Animals or More to Obscured By Clouds.

Khor1255, I must say I'm slightly surprised to see Obscured by Clouds second on your list - what about it appeals to you more than the more widely acclaimed albums? Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just interested to know as generally doesn't tend to get that highly rated.

MW, I agree it can be quite difficult to rank them, sometimes I think WYWH tops Dark Side, and the order albums 3-5 on my list do change (I love The Wall as a rock opera, and I think it has plenty of great songs, but sometimes I'd rather hear the sound of Pink Floyd working as a band on Meddle and even on Animals).

I got into Floyd heavily in the mid 80s and everyone I knew was always playing the favorites (Meddle, DSOTM, The Wall, Animals, WYWH) including me. When I first got Obscured it was from a cassette tape bargain bin and I thought it was the weirdest departure for them until I realized it was actually Santanna's Abraxes taped over my version of Obscured. It had been a while since I heard Abraxes so it didn't dawn on me right away (durr). I guess when I finally got Obscured it just sounded that much greater for the long road I had to take to get to it. The album actually kind of crept into my consciousness and I found myself singing those songs when I was walking or alone or whatever more than just about any other Floyd song. I sill turn to that one more than just about anything else by them. I know it is almost 'painfully' laid back but something about it...

Sorry for the long response but I had a lo of time to think about i while I was shuffling around to make my list. The giant cup of coffee I had probably also just added fuel to the fire.

Interesting, I agree it has a nice feel and a certain charm to it even though I don't consider it to be one of my favourites by the Floyd. My favourite part of the album is the stretch from Burning Bridges to Mudmen, tracks 3-6 - I really like those songs, The Gold It's In The... rocks and Wot's... Uh The Deal is lovely.

Our lists were quite different, but I did notice that we had Meddle and Animals in the same positions.

Its good to see some lists that don't have The Wall or DSOTM at the top two spots.

While I do understand that "Wall" and DSOTM along with "Wish You Were Here" are heralded as FLoyd's finest works,I myself, and I'm not alone here, actuallly prefer earlier more pure psych-rock Floyd.Of course, one of the reasons is I've been bombarded by the tracks from the three aforementioned albums so much,I've grown a bit tired of them.Mostly recently,I've been listening to "Saucerful of Secrets" and I'd like to get the "More" soundtrack probably on CD,but no matter what format I get it in,I'm afraid I've all but scratched up my vinyl copy. That aside,"More" and "Secrects" create their own little microcosms that for me are a bit more adventurous that their greater known works. What can anyone tell me about Syd Barrett's solo efforts "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett"?

Syd's stuff is interesting but it's very quirky and even jinglesque at times. It's a little frustrating for me to listen to because it sounds as if he's almost there sometimes but refuses to really let any harmony come through this wall of eclectic retreatism. Worth a listen though.

don't expect too much. There are flashes of brilliance but a lot is hard to listen to because you know he was just deteriorating mentally at the time. And it shows.

Brilliant Syd songs, for me are: Dark Globe, Gigolo Aunt, Vegetable Man, baby Lemonade, Octopus, Dominoes, It's No Good Trying...

I'm a big fan of their early work too. Their live performances around 1969-70 are amazing.
