Atom Heart Mother is pretty nice. I enjoy the title track, If and Summer '68 the most. Fat Old Sun is okay. Never quite got into Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast. I haven't listened to this album in its entirety in a million years! :D

I really like Atom Heart Mother myself (you might be able to tell this :D ). I firmly agree with architect's description of the album, it's mellow It's a very 'English' album too, from the pastoral countryside feel and the cow on the album cover to the brass in the title track and the bell sound effects in Fat Old Sun.

The title track is good for the most part, with some really strong sections (Breast Milky and Funky Dung both feature some good), the noises in Mind Your Throats Please I could do without. Overall I think it works, and for me this is where the 1970s Pink Floyd starts to really take shape, before their quintessential sound would be solidified on Meddle.

The three middle tracks are all good, enjoyable tracks in different ways - I tend to consider Fat Old Sun my favourite (I think it captures that 'summer day in the countryside' feel best, and I like Gilmour's guitar solo a lot) but the other two are of a similar standard. If is also quite significant as it features Roger Waters' first lyrical references to insanity.

I must admit I love Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, hearing Alan speak about his breakfast just makes me smile (marmalade...I like marmalade etc.), it's good to hear Pink Floyd doing something humorous but unlike Seamus and Several Species of Small Furry Animals it's musically strong, especially part two Sunny Side Up which features some gorgeous steel guitar by Gilmour.

Am I correct in assuming that the "Alan" in "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" was Floyd engineer Alan Parsons?

Actually it was Alan Styles, one of the band's roadies.

From the back cover of Ummagumma, He's the one on the left.

Nine years today since the last ever performance of (post Barrett) Pink Floyd's four members.

THE ENDLESS RIVER'
Pink Floyd can confirm that they are releasing a new album, The Endless River, in October 2014. It is an album of mainly ambient and instrumental music based on the 1993/4 Division Bell sessions which feature David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. The album is produced by David Gilmour with Phil Manzanera, Youth and recording engineer Andy Jackson. Work is still in progress, but more details to come at the end of the summer.

Its a double treat of Pink Floyd news.

As well as the announcement of the new P.F. album for later this year. David is also working on a solo album for release in 2015.

Very interesting. Lots of good points made and a few not so good ones too. It also begs the question: How would you rank them? I know how I would. :)

1. Wish You Were Here
2. Animals
3. Dark Side of The Moon
4. Meddle
5. Atom Heart Mother
6. Piper At The Gates of Dawn
7. The Wall
8. Obscured By Clouds
9. Ummagumma
10. Saucerful of Secrets
11. More
12. Division Bell
13. A Momentary Lapse of Reason
14. The Final Cut

My list would be as follows, more or less:

1) The Dark Side Of The Moon
2) Wish You Were Here
3) The Wall
4) Meddle
5) Animals
6) Atom Heart Mother
7) The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
8) The Division Bell
9) Ummagumma (live album + studio album)
10) Saucerful Of Secrets
11) Obscured By Clouds
12) A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

Brief summary:
The top 5 are all fantastic albums.
Atom Heart Mother I find consistently very good, albeit not quite at the level of my top 5.
Albums 7-9 all have some first rate songs, but each also has one or two I'm not so keen on.
Albums 10-11 are generally fairly good, but lack any really outstanding songs, I find.
A Momentary Lapse Of Reason I'm not too fond of, I'd rather it had been released as a David Gilmour album rather than a Pink Floyd one.

I'm not sufficiently familiar with either More or The Final Cut to be able to rank either properly, though from the songs I have heard I find More enjoyable if not essential, but am not really a fan of The Final Cut (Waters' domination of the band went too far, and the lyrics on songs like The Fletcher Memorial Home cross a line for me).
