Rolling stone? Anyone?

I only buy Rolling Stone once every blue moon - the last issue I bought was the Stones 'Exile on Main Street' issue (I cannot resist buying any mag with Keef on the cover). I used to have a gf who subscribed to RS for a long time, so I read every issue from about 1998 'til about 2003 or so (she finally quit subscribing, but would still buy it pretty often).

Most of what RS covers, I'm not that interested in, but there was usually at least one thing in each issue that I was very interested in. I miss reading it regularly, but not enough to buy it. (I actually like most of their political coverage).

A co-worker just brought in an issue of Rolling Stone from 1971, with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull on the cover. I've never seen an issue of RS this old, and it was incredibly cool back then! Wish it weren't so corporate these days.

I don't buy any music mags regularly these days, but my favorites are Shindig, Mojo (love those cds that come with Mojo!), Guitar Player & Guitar World.

There was a magazine that I used to subscribe to in the 80s, that hasn't been around for a long time, that I really miss: Musician. I think that was my favorite music mag ever.

Rolling Stone is a waste of paper these days. They have no clue what demographic they're aiming for so they're all over to map trying to cater to anybody willing to buy their mag. You'll find someone like Justin Bieber on the cover and an in-depth interview with an old, reliable warhorse like say Eric Clapton on the inside. They'll be political articles next to fashion spreads from Lady Gaga. Even the record reviews are almost always positive because they don't want to offend any part of their audience. RS has been on a downward spiral for the past 20 years or so and I'm surprised they're still around. It's a shame because the writing is usually top-notched even when the subject matter is fluff.

Another faithful ex-Creem reader here. For better or worse, they played a big role in shaping my musical tastes. Funny as hell too. Even if they were bashing someone you enjoyed, you couldn't help but laugh. As far as I'm concerned, they're one of the few publications that captured the spirit of rock and roll. I have a couple of big piles of old issues too. I just can't bear parting with them!

I used to read Creem also, and Circus,Hit Parader,Rock Scene. Lots of good ones back in the 70s, these days with the www. the old rock mag is kinda obsolete.

Shindig! is a wonderful magazine that comes out every other month. They prominently feature sixties music and are heavily into garage but they also cover psychedelic, prog, folk and other assorted genres and mini-genres. It has surpassed Mojo as my favorite music oriented magazine. I can see a lot of people here getting into Shindig! if they haven't already.

I haven't seen an issue of Shindig! for ages. Another great one, although it only comes out about once a year, is Ugly Things.

See that's what I liked about Blender! It wasn't afraid to talk about Lady Gaga in one article, a rock vet like Bruce Springsteen in the next and even God Forbid a hip hop artist like Lil' Wayne in the next or a country artist like Emmy Lou Harris. I want an all encompassing music magazine and I don't think Rolling Stone is varied enough. Maybe it would have room for more if it removed the political crap. :D

I buy "Shindig" on occasion. It's a great mag!

Creem was the best Rock & Roll Magazine of all-time.

I know People put down Rolling Stone & I can understand why but what is worth getting is the 3 disc DVD-Rom of Rolling Stone Cover to Cover. It contains every issue up until 2007 but what's great about it is the search engine. You just type in a band name or a movie or an actor or actress & it will list every RS magazine they are in & tells you what disc to put in to find the article. I always thought Kiss was shunned by Rolling Stone but there were a lot of articles & reviews on them. The coverage RS did on the events leading up to & including the deaths of Nancy Spungen & Sid Vicious are great. Alice Cooper had a few cover stories & many articles & reviews. Plus it has all of the old ads.
When I fist seen it in 2007 it was an outrageous price of $125.00 but within 6 months I got it for 24.99(plus it came with a 2 year subscription!). I was at Borders the other day & they were selling them for...$4.99!!! I never was a huge fan of RS but this is definitely worth getting
