I've been keeping an eye on this thread and have remained silent. Until now...

I don't really care what Joe Elliot said. I don't really care what the press said. I don't see how anyone can compare their greatness to the Beatles or U2. That is like comparing cancer to the common cold IMO... it simply can't be done. Lep is a monster in the history of R'N'R.... their own legacy. Never perfect at all times but show me one band that ever was. Period.

who said I didn't like Def Leppard? Until Steve Clark died I thought they practically could walk on water. I've said I like them about eight times this thread.

Regardless, Joe Elliott bashing The Beatles (which is about the worst thing any artist can do... remember Terence Trent D'Arby? that was his kiss of death), Springsteen, U2, R.E.M. and Morrissey was arrogant and pointless. When you attack other artists (especially as all but Moz/Smiths are Hall Of Famers) to make your point, you look bad.

I didn't say you didn't like them. What I said was comparing three such diverse talents was pointless. Each has their own merits yet are nothing similar.

And I also don't think Joe bashed anyone other than the press. Re-read his quote...

Wow! With, like, such a, like, mastery of articulation n stuff, how can anyone not consider him one of history's, like, greatest lyricists and junk??
He was speaking colloquially Dr. Hypocrite.

That's better than bashing him, and then using the sounds/"words" of a small child, like "n" in place of and to "articulate" your point.

What's silly about all of this is that Joe should be happy with what he has accomplished.

Me? I find the first album to be loaded with intelligent words and music.

As far as the more poppier side of Def Leppard?? I still find it to be intelligent...and these guys know what they are doing.

I'm so tired of "smart lyrics" or "smart music" (whatever that may be from day to day) being the only things critically accepted by these pencil pushers.

I like protest music, psychedelic music, art rock, metal, pop, and none of them could not do what the other does. Joe does what he does very well and should not worry about being a moron, or stupid, just because he's not trying to make us over think his lyrics or music.

That to me is just silly. As a music fan, I don't feel that I need to be challenged at all times. Sometimes I simply just wish to relate. :grinthumb

Unnecessary sulking from Joe imo, I think they do get the respect they desserve. Maybe if they had kept up the quality of music to match their first three albums they would be lavished more praise, I know I lost interest in them (after being a big fan) after Hysteria - they just went too commercialised for me.

The thing is, is that Def Leppard were one of the early NWOBHM bands and they sounded similar to bands like Angel Witch...well at least on the song Angel Witch.

Just picture this as a song on On Through The Night...it sounds like early Leppard vocally and musically, or vise versa.

I agree with you in spirit. Over the last 365 days, 99% of my music listening has belonged to bubblegum pop. And even at my artsiest, I've never been interested in the kind of long-winded, Desolation Row-style stream of consciousness. I like lyrics that make sense, give me Tangled Up In Blue or It Ain't Me Babe instead.

But I still think different avenues rightfully praise different types of bands. There are magazines that are interested in Bruce Springsteen and U2, and then there are magazines that are interested in Def Leppard and Motley Crue... what's wrong with that?

Obviously I used "n" as a means to mock and mirror his language. But I enjoy informal language myself, I spend most of my time on twitter. What makes his case so hilarious is that the guy is declaring himself some sort of brilliant artisan. If he wasn't overflowing with hubris I'd have nothing to critique in his speech.

I'd put Def Leppard in the same category as Grand Funk Railroad in the 70's - the critics hated them, but the people loved them. Why should Joe worry about the press - he's sitting pretty high on the hog isn't he? - forget them!
