I am not really a Def Leppard fan but I will say that I like Joe Elliot more than Bono and Morrissey by a landslide.

I do think it'd been better had Joe not namedropped those artists. I am not a Moz fan so I won't comment there. But while I think it's pretty common knowledge that U2, REM, Springsteen and McCartney are many years past their peaks, they still make good music on pretty much every album they record, even if their days of crafting masterpieces are well behind them. Neither Def Lep nor Bon Jovi have really impressed me since the early 90's, they both went way too soft and then started catering to the AC and country crowds more than rock, which is why I think they don't get as much respect as they could get. When I want to listen to Def Leppard, I'll reach for Pyromania or High N' Dry, not a collaboration with Taylor Swift. Those "respected" artists have evolved too but they haven't gone so far away from their original mission statements that they have zero appeal left to those fans from the start.

He continued, "We've sold more records than Morrissey and I think I'm a better singer than Morrissey and we think we write better songs than Morrissey yet they'll still think that Morrissey is really cool because he was once in THE SMITHS.

I don't think this outburst will help his cause much lol

I agree. I prefer Def Leppard to Moz/The Smiths, but not because they sold more records.

Nowadays selling better means nothing because by that logic, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle are the best artists around making music :uh: Very few of the acts I'm into currently sell enough to go gold.

Whether he is or isn't is hardly the point though, it just makes him come across as arrogant.

I couldn't agree more! I mean the guy namedrops Lennon/McCartney and then whines about not being placed on that level! What a fool. I think Lep was one of the best of their ilk, second probably only to Jovi in my book. But it's just so unbelievably silly when these hard rock bands whine about not being treated like The Beatles or alt-rock bands. Does Neil Young bitch and moan about not being considered a classical pianist? Sheesh.

I agree, this is like when Kanye West complained that he didn't win "Album of the year" his first album out, something Bob Dylan took 35 years to win, something The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin (even though many saw Plant's win as a consolation prize), Springsteen, Prince, REM, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, Elton John, Pink Floyd or many others didn't do in their entire careers.

Def Leppard have some amazing songs, but placing themselves next to The Beatles or even U2 is stretching it.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread and have remained silent. Until now...

I don't really care what Joe Elliot said. I don't really care what the press said. I don't see how anyone can compare their greatness to the Beatles or U2. That is like comparing cancer to the common cold IMO... it simply can't be done. Lep is a monster in the history of R'N'R.... their own legacy. Never perfect at all times but show me one band that ever was. Period.
