My choice is Grace Slick over Janis Joplin if we are talking R & R Queen. Grace for having a much longer career. Ann Wilson after them mostly because not my style.
There aren't really any Mick Jaggers or Ozzy Osbournes in rock for women. Yanno, those iconic rockers that have been in the spot life for practically their entire lives. That makes this a difficult question without any clear cut answers.
When I think of female rocker though the architype that comes to mind for me is none other than Joan Jett. She isn't the biggest but I think she is the biggest that rocks as hard as she does.
And as I re-read this thread I like that my answer hasn't changed in the 3 years since this thread was started.
My three favorite female rock stars are Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Joan Jett. Each one is great and unique, so it's difficult to pick who is the greatest or biggest of all time.
But of course Janis Joplin is a legend, a brilliant shooting star who packed it all in for just a brief period of years before meeting with a tragic end, so she would be my number one choice. She was definitely down to earth. I love this clip where she invites people up on stage...
