I don't know if he can be considered rock, but if you were to drop Lenny Kravitz off in 1973 or 74, and he'd fit perfectly. He'd be a fixture on the R&B and soul charts.

He's got the funk, too.

A little bland don't you think? I agree he emulates the style quite a bit but among even the lesser known artists of the era I don't think he'd stand a chance.

But then again, it's not like bland didn't sell back then as well so....

Beauty is in the ear of the listener. That's cool. Not everyone hears the same things from the same songs. For example, there are a jillion Hendrix fans out there, and to me, he's always sounded like a distorted mess.

I've just always considered Lenny to be somewhat of a throw back.

That's how I hear it, anyway.

I don't think there are very many current/newer artists that would have made much of an impact in the 70's. As much fun as I can have ripping on the music scene over the past 20 years and how much truly awful music that has come out in that time, my comment above has nothing to do with that.

The flip side of that, I don't believe that very many artists from the 70's would be very big now, if they were currently a NEW band, not just a shell of themselves from 30+ years ago. VERY few would be able to trancend the times and make it in today's music industry.

There are a lot of bands of recent years that have taken insiperation from the 70's and made it there own. See my Retro thread for samples where the late great Joe and I went to great lenghts to enlighten the masses but were mostly ignored...

And by "transcending the times", do you mean produce crap for the masses?

Aero, you are quite the pessimist. Forget the pop charts and MTV. There is plenty of good music being made today.

Adele would have scored big in any era, for example.

Graveyard, Electric Mary and The Quill spring to mind. I'm tempted to add Spock's Beard and Transatlantic, but the technology they use has changed. Jazz rock supergroups, featuring Portnoy, Sheehan and others, would have been right at home. There are also bands from the eighties and nineties who would have fitted in the seventies, like Blue Muder, Badlands and early Manowar.

Graveyard sprung immediately to mind for me too :grinthumb
