Hi all ....I just bought a CD by a new band from Chicago called "The Redwalls".
I gotta tell you ...these guys really have done their homework. If you like John Lennon and old David Bowie, you really owe it to yourself. Also, I was completely amazed to find out that the oldest member of the band is 22 !!!!!

I'll definetly check these guys out, thanks man. (I can't do it right now since everyone in my house is asleep)

But seriously this thread brings up something that I've always wanted some input on. I have never personally heard a rock band that sounds like they literally could have come out in the sixties or seventies. There can be plenty of similarity and connections, but I see equally strong similarities between Nirvana & Led Zeppelin as I do for Silvertide & Led Zeppelin. For example I absolutely love Silvertide but they don't sound anything like a true sixties/seventies rock band. Their production style is totally current and they use a lot of tips & tricks from the modern scene.

So -- am I just underlistened and I haven't heard enough supposedly retro bands, or is there some substance to my argument? It's true that I have not heard that many retro rock bands, but so far I've seen people call bands retro when really they're about as retro as Audioslsave. I don't mean to sound like a ranter - there's nothing wrong with using modern production and all of that (I'm actually a HUGE fan of modern production styles!! Not to mention how much I love Silvertide) but are there any bands that really sound like they're from the classic rock era, no ifs ands or buts? If you heard any of their songs on the radio it wouldn't even cross your mind's subconcious that it's a modern song?

Uhh yeah and sorry for bringing down your thread, dude. Sorry!

I can see your point.
I think that the redwalls actually reverted back to older techniques to record.
Lots of really crappy old instruments also. However...when I played the CD on break last weekend, I had 2 (count em' 2) die hard beatles fans that were dying to know where I got the bootleg stuff from.

Amazing. :D

(Alas, I can't listen to 'em still since I didn't get up until night time.)

Both came out in the early 90's and have a very 70's sound IMO.

I am becoming a huge fan of two retro sounding groups (both that I saw in concert last Saturday, July 9th, 2005). Both are from other countries, but that shouldn't preclude them from being though of well (actually that adds to there charm) and also they both did very well live:

the Caesars they have that song that's really a throw back, "Jerk It Out"
and Stereophonics they have that song that's really kind of a Classic in the making, "Dakota"

I also have to admit that I would like to go to the Atlana show for Oasis, but partly so I can see one other new group that are coming with them:

Keane ("Somewhere Only We Know")

And I also love the sounds from:

The Killers ("Mr. Brightside")

I also am fond of Anna Nalik ("Breathe 3 A.M.") and some are comparing to such singers as Jewell, but I think she sounds more like, a young Carole King.

Oh Yeah ....definately Cry of Love...what's funny about that is that My best friend is going in the Studio at the end of August to record with Audley Freed...the old guitar player for them on the first 2 albums. Another good early 90's retro band is "Brother Cane "

That's cool. Keep me posted as I'd like to check that out.

And yes Brother Cane was in the same boat.

While not exactly new, I reallydig the Brian Setzer Orchestra. I also really liked the Stray Cats when the were new, but had that retro rockabilly sound.
