Anyway, whatever. I gave my opinions on the question/topic at hand.
Well, I said it would polarise and I was right. Some interesting comments. Most if not all of the comments above are more measured than those of the journalist in Classic Rock magazine (and don't get me wrong, generally I think the CR journalistic standard is high, hence the surprise).
My observation is that part of it has its source in a pre-conceived idea that the rawer the musical form the more feeling therein. And the answer to that is that it depends on the musical form in question. By definition, soul with no "soul" is not that thing. Same obvious point with blues.
Prog on the other hand, takes a longer less linear route. It still arrives at the human predicament but not directly and sometimes that route is a 1.4 hour concept LP (e.g. Dream Theater's Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory) that is no less emotionally valid than, say, Otis Redding's Otis Blue.
Complexity does not equate to an emotionless void. For those still undecided, listen again. Maybe start with Dark Side of The Moon, move onto Script From A Jester's Tear and finish with DT's Images and Words. Happy listening.
