On 21st February 2012, Pussy Riot (a Russian punk rock group) performed 'Virgin Mary, Put Putin Away' in front of the iconostasis of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, in Moscow, inspired by their opposition to Vladimir Putin and his support from the Russian Orthodox Church. On 3rd March 2012, after the video of the performance appeared online, three of the group members were arrested and faced with trumped-up charges of hooliganism and inciting religious hatred.

A trial began in late July 2012 and aroused international publicity, because of allegations of harsh treatment against the women while in custody and a threat of a seven-year jail sentence. One can only assume that Russians themselves were afraid to speak out against the trial.

Yesterday, 17th August 2012, the three members were unsurprisingly convicted of hooliganism and each sentenced to two years imprisonment. The Russian Orthodox Church appealed appealed to the court to "divide the sin from sinner and reprimand the first while hoping the latter will improve". The foreign ministries of Germany, Sweden, together with representatives of the European Union and the United States described the sentence as, "Disproportionate". Thus far, the church and international representatives appear to have done nothing.

Pussy Riot have received at least emotional support from musicians such as: Kate Nash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Cornershop, Faith No More, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, Patti Smith, The Beastie Boys, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Townshend, Madonna, Genesis, Johnny Marr, Courtney Love, Corinne Bailey Rae, Peter Hammill, Björk, Yoko Ono and, most notably, Paul McCartney.

In speaking out against the megalomaniac Putin, these women were positively heroic (albeit lacking in caution), but I fear his control of European fuel pipes, through Russia, will mitigate against them.

While the wealthy continue to destroy the middle class and everything we've built over the last 60 years this Jethro Tull song from the 80's seems fitting right now.

Fallen on Hard Times.

I can't believe the support this punk band has gotten and by notable names in the biz. I wonder though if the band was made up of all men if they'd get the same support.

Whatever the case, I do think their punishment is laughable. To live under such laws must be incredibly oppressing.

I think they are laughable. Have you ever heard their 'music'? But on top of that they went into a church and sung a song replacing the word God with shit over and over again. This was no real political statement more like attention whoring to the largest group of people. 2 years is a small price to pay for the undeserved ammount of publicity these hacks have recieved.

Smear Campaign - Rory Gallagher

The dirty tricks department is working overtime
Trying to stop the candidate from getting in this time
The wheels are now in motion all the traps are set
Under this commotion will he walk into this mess

The state's intoxicated they're at the starting gate
He may never make it to the planned TV debate
He can't fight off the big bucks of the old brigade
He's gotta watch his step in this smear campaign

They called a snap election in the summer heat
This town is reeling backwards
Like a drunk man on the streets
Bend those minds at any price

Don't believe the papers it's not anybody's race
He's not a rank beginner it's not a children's game
He may get the nomination if he breaks through the chain
Or they'll shoot him down on Main street in this smear campaign

Just watch the party faithful fuel the dream machine
They've fudged up all the issues eat that scandal sheet
The dirty tricks department is nearly half insane
Trying to stop the candidate with a smear campaign

I'm sure their music sucks but that's beside the point. As for the publicity, that just came because those of us who live in "free" countries, and I use that word loosely these days, see this prison sentence as incredibly unjust. Slapping them with a fine I can understand, but throwing someone behind bars for 2 years for this type of thing is completely wrong.
