Classic by Adrian Gurvitz
Classic, a solo single by Adrian Gurvitz, formerly of Gun (Race With the Devil) and Baker Gurvitz Army, became an instant classic for all the wrong reasons. Even small children and family pets noticed this turkey. The opening line, which rhymes 'classic' with 'attic', is not just a bad rhyme, it is also emphasised immediately.
Gurvitz then goes on, not just repeating this terrible line, but adding further self-pitying nonsense. Who is that American politician who spoke in gibberish about they don't know what we know they know, etc? Adrian Gurvitz can match him with, 'And it's not what I mean I mean it's not what it seems I just keep living for dreams And it's not what I mean I mean it's not what it seems I just keep living for dreams'! Astonishingly, he admits his own difficulty with writing lyrics, 'Expressing my words One bridge at a time Then tearing them up 'Cause they never rhyme'.
The horrible irony of this, is that I loved his previous bands, Three Man Army, Baker Gurvitz Army and The Graeme Edge Band. The first Baker Gurvitz Army album is a true heavy rock classic and Ginger Baker was never better than with this band. Baker's career is well documented, but I don't know what happened to the Gurvitz brothers apart from Adrian having a hit with Classic. For all I know, Adrian's solo album may have been good(?).
Classic lyrics
Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love
I was a stray boy
And you was my best toy
Found it easy to annoy you
But you were different from the rest
And I loved you all the wrong ways
Now listen to my say
If it changed to another way
Would the difference make it
Would it be a classic
I gotta send it right away
Expressing my words
One bridge at a time
Then tearing them up
'Cause they never rhyme
Alone in my room
So far from your love
Whatever I write
That's not good enough
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams
Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love
Gotta write it down and send it right away
Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love
Now I'm living my life
One day at a time
Since losing your love
I've been losing my mind
No more can I see
The future so clear
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams
Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
I'm an addict for your love
Gotta write it down and send it right away
