Classic by Adrian Gurvitz

Classic, a solo single by Adrian Gurvitz, formerly of Gun (Race With the Devil) and Baker Gurvitz Army, became an instant classic for all the wrong reasons. Even small children and family pets noticed this turkey. The opening line, which rhymes 'classic' with 'attic', is not just a bad rhyme, it is also emphasised immediately.

Gurvitz then goes on, not just repeating this terrible line, but adding further self-pitying nonsense. Who is that American politician who spoke in gibberish about they don't know what we know they know, etc? Adrian Gurvitz can match him with, 'And it's not what I mean I mean it's not what it seems I just keep living for dreams And it's not what I mean I mean it's not what it seems I just keep living for dreams'! Astonishingly, he admits his own difficulty with writing lyrics, 'Expressing my words One bridge at a time Then tearing them up 'Cause they never rhyme'.

The horrible irony of this, is that I loved his previous bands, Three Man Army, Baker Gurvitz Army and The Graeme Edge Band. The first Baker Gurvitz Army album is a true heavy rock classic and Ginger Baker was never better than with this band. Baker's career is well documented, but I don't know what happened to the Gurvitz brothers apart from Adrian having a hit with Classic. For all I know, Adrian's solo album may have been good(?).

Classic lyrics

Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love
I was a stray boy
And you was my best toy
Found it easy to annoy you
But you were different from the rest
And I loved you all the wrong ways
Now listen to my say
If it changed to another way
Would the difference make it
Would it be a classic
I gotta send it right away

Expressing my words
One bridge at a time
Then tearing them up
'Cause they never rhyme
Alone in my room
So far from your love
Whatever I write
That's not good enough
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams

Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love
Gotta write it down and send it right away
Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
An addict for your love

Now I'm living my life
One day at a time
Since losing your love
I've been losing my mind
No more can I see
The future so clear
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams
And it's not what I mean
I mean it's not what it seems
I just keep living for dreams

Got to write a classic
Got to write it in an attic
Babe, I'm an addict now
I'm an addict for your love
Gotta write it down and send it right away

It is easy for me to be self righteous about poor lyrics, especially as I have never written a hit song. When I look at I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles (Paul McCartney), it seems a poor lyric, but it is actually a great record. Peter Sellers, produced by George Martin, sent up The Beatles lyrics to Hard Day's Night by reading them as if performing Shakespeare (Richard III and the 'Now is the winter of our discontent . . .' speech). However, The Beatles had the last laugh, as simplicity was supremely effective. Indeed, Shakespeare was a very good poet because he rarely used polysyllabic words.

I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 !

Well, she was just 17,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare.
So how could I dance with another (ooh)
When I saw her standin' there.

Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her.
She wouldn't dance with another (whooh)
When I saw her standin' there.

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

Well, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now, I'll never dance with another (whooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

Oh, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (whooh)
Since I saw her standing there 3x

Has anyone started a best lyrics thread? I could not find one after a search.

:wtf:

Must...be...civil...

I have no objection to someone having their own opinions, but calling a songwriter whose lyrical achievements have gotten him widespread acclaim and several Nobel Prize nominations "dumb" is not really fair or valid.
First off, my opinion is NO LESS valid than yours or anyone elses.

Second ... I NEVER said Bob Dylan is dumb. I said (and I quote) "another guy with ridiculously dumb lyrics in a number of tunes".

So, while I don't think he, himself, is dumb... I think he's got a lot of dumb songs and I would classify the guy as one of THE most overrated songwriters/artists in history. The draw that people have to him baffles the hell out of me, but that's another topic entirely since the topic here is worst lyrics.

This competes for worst ever lyrics written.

Lyrics to Morbid Angel Radikult
'Cause we've been crossing the line since 1989
We're moving the world
Because our power is a shining
Sick groove with ****ing magic to prove that
The radicals are here to stay!

W'ere living hardcore and radical
We'll always be maniacal and animal
They fear us cause we're physical irrational
Our radi-killer kult is thriving!

We're banging hardcore radical
Maniacal and animal
Beast stomping with an appetite insatiable
We are the radikult...

W'ere living hardcore and radical
We'll always be maniacal and animal
They fear us cause we're physical irrational
Our radikult is thriving!

Bang it hardcore and radical
Maniacal and like an animal
Beasts stomping with an appetite insatiable
We are the radikult...

Heh, I would have figured Riff would have put this one on the list:

^^^ cracks me up every time I see that. :heheh:

I would have but that cracks me up still, there was a worse set of lyrics that actually made me feel embarrassed to listen to that particular tune. :heheh:
Morbid Angels Radikult which I posted above. Most embarrassing 'head up their own arse' type lyrics ever.

The first thing that comes to mind is in Civil War by GNR, that one part where Axl says "Ain't that fresh" :bonk:
