Yeah HENDRIX rated CLAPTON & BILLY GIBBONS of ZZ TOP also i believe he name dropped LISLIE WEST of MOUNTAIN as well in one of his last interviews with rock journalist KEITH ALTHAM in Sept 1970.

I have read that RORY met HENDRIX but it is 'unknown' if the two actually jammed together?. What i know of HENDRIX he would have really "dug" RORY i'm 100% sure of that :grinthumb

Hendrix played the Isle of Wright Festival with Rory and Taste in 1970

So, I'm sure Jimi knew of Rory Gallagher.

I bet they met backstage, somewhere...

maybe even had a few together.

:cheers2

I'm not sure that this was strickly the case Groovy man a common misconception made by lots of people about the Isle of Wight festival (i've read this claim in several books about other musician's claiming that they had met HENDRIX at this festival). What i've read on HENDRIX and what was published in a book by TONY BROWN in 1997 called HENDRIX THE FINAL DAYS (The last 3-wks of Jimi's life an hour by hour account) was that HENDRIX arrived at the gig only hours before he went on stage at around 2:am on the 31st August then immediately after he had played his 2-hrs set split (left) the Isle of Wight in a helicopter to start a short european tour of Scandinavia & Germany.

Rory Gallagher: [Smiles then Rory smile and nods] I saw Jimi in Belfast twice. In London one night I was in the same room as him and shook his hand, but we didn’t really meet. He was frightening, superb. I think that he’s the supreme showman of the guitar after Guitar Slim who was real wild, and of course, Buddy Guy who was also pretty wild in his day too ......

Taken from an interview with Rory by Ray Minhinnett.

It's a shame they never had a chance to jam and trade licks.

Wot i would like to know and i've never quite foundout is RORY GALLAGHER toured several times with DEEP PURPLE in the early 1970s and i've never heard if RORY & RITCHIE BLACKMORE ever jammed together at pre-gigs/sound checks?. I remember reading years ago that BLACKMORE didn't like the idea of a 2nd guitar player in DEEP PURPLE and preferred JON LORDS Hammond organ to a 2nd guitar in the band. I believe BLACKMORE claimed that he couldn't play with another guitar player because he wouldn't want to be 'up staged' by another guy!!.

I do know Ritchie jammed with Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash and was so impressed he introduced Andy to a producer friend of his. Taste were also a support act for Cream on the farewell tour .. I wonder if Rory and Eric had a jam ??

Yeah i've read that one myself Sox about Andy Powell of WISHBONE ASH. DEREK LAWRANCE producer had worked on DEEP PURPLE'S first three studio albums but by the time of the recording of (there breakthrough album in the UK) IN ROCK the band wanted to change producer's so got DEREK interested in WISHBONE ASH i believe so they could bring in MARTIN BIRCH.

RITCHIE BLACKMORE did jam on stage at a SWEET gig sometime around 1976 cos it was recorded and was made available in a very limited release to SWEET & RAINBOW fan's about 15 years ago.

I should like to hear that E-Z. I have a mate a few years older than me who saw Rainbow backed by a band called Tiger with Big Jim Sullivan. I believe Big Jim taught Ritchie the ropes in the early days ??

Getting back to Rory .. I would have given anything to have seen him and Johnny Winter let loose together on the stage. A guitar fantasy:bow:

Yeah so i've read that RITCHIE rated BIG JIM SULLIVAN and that BIG JIM had taught RITCHIE some guitar in the early days :)

Yeah RORY & JOHNNY WINTER now that would have been a sight to see they would have 'burned the stage' those two!!

Old Johnny doesn't look to good in the last few years, i always rated his CBS years between 1969-80 his CAPTURED LIVE album (recorded around 1974 but released in 1976) is one mother of a LIVE ALBUM!! :grinthumb

^^ Agreed those are IMO the Johnny Winter works to chase up. Yeah I saw Johnny a few years ago and he had to be lead onto the stage where his seat was. However when he played it was something else.:grinthumb
