Following his departure from Black Sabbath Ronnie James Dio got together with fellow ex-Sab bandmate Vinny Appice, they picked up Jimmy Bain and went in search of a guitar man. Eventually with Viv Campbell on board it was time to get to work in the studio. The result was the incredible 1983 debut album "Holy Diver". Dio went on to record some timeless classics.

I never saw him live EF, could have a couple times but just never got there and he passed away before the 2010 Heaven And Hell at high voltage, I always regret missing him.

Magic, I agree what a brilliant follow up album :cheers2

To me, the word "DIO" means two things. The band and the man. I think that a great many people consider "DIO" to simply mean Ronnie James Dio as a solo artist, much like "Ozzy" is referring to Ozzy Osbourne... I know that for many years, I always considered "DIO" to be Ronnie's solo career, but that simply isn't true. Dio was the band that he fronted after leaving Black Sabbath, much like Bon Jovi is a band, Danzig was/is a band, Dokken is a band, and Van Halen are a band.

As for DIO, what an incredible band. Their first two albums are among the best in the history of metal. Ronnie's voice was never better than it was on Holy Diver and The Last in Line, and that says a lot about a guy who was at the top of his game for 35+ years in hard rock and metal.

I will definitely be hitting up this thread with opinions when I can. Long overdue. Thanks for starting it up Sox! :cheers2

Lynch, although I agree with his vocal achievements on the first two albums let's not forget the awesome Stange Highways. But maybe that's for later in the thread. :grinthumb.

Here's a little something you all may like. A clip from the old Hard 'N Heavy video magazine series.

Interviews and footage from the LOCK UP THE WOLVES sessions.

Lock up the Wolves is a great album that I don't think gets anywhere near enough credit for being as good as it is.

I used to love those Hard and Heavy tapes. :grinthumb
