I heard the original versions of some of those Van Halen covers in the 60s. I like both versions (originals and remakes). I was never really a big Kinks fan but I suspect I'll explore them (and a few other Brit Invasion bands I never got into) at some point. I didn't know that "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" (Diver Down) was a Kinks cover, but man do I dig that tune. I think Diver Down is a flawed album, in that it has all those covers and it sounds thrown together (and also if you compare it to the previous album "Fair Warning" - DD is a letdown). But some of those original tracks on DD really kick (but my favorite track is the Kinks cover). I really don't think cover versions are such a bad thing either. Lots of bands have done (and do) covers. I really prefer a lot of the Beatles covers over the originals myself.

oh my. I remember hearing that Van Halen cover and saying how they destroyed a great song. Give me Roy Orbson any day of the week

Well I have a fondness for Roy's version anyway and I like it better. However I didn't say "Oh My" when I heard Van Halen's version.

I don't understand conversations that tend to lean towards anything heavier than experimental, progressive or alternative (all of which I own and listen to) as taboo or not right.

I agree also for myself that it's never really one band that influence me either, except in my case I can understand all types of genres.

It's all art and expression...and the funny thing is you don't get this between musicians (rarely)...only fans.

Van Halen can listen to R.E.M. and appreciate on a pro level as R.E.M. could listen to & appreciate AC/DC and all attend similar industry functions.

Back in the old days of Gynger Lynn I met Adrian Belew in the recording studio and we talked to each other as musicians who clearly understood what we both did. Not some divided line between hard rock and prog.

I've said it before and I will say it again....I love ELP on record and have never been too impressed with Carl Palmer live (mainly in things like Asia) as I don't like when he's attempting "solid rythyms".

It's difficult for over the top prog guys to play straight rock and harder for straight up rockers to play all out prog (except maybe for Arjen or many of today's stronger metal acts). But both sides can, have, dabble and show that they are mentally capable.

This whole my band is smarter than your band is boring and tiresome. We like what we like because at the end of the day the only one getting the last laugh are the pro's and I'm sure they all share funny stories together regarding their collective fan base wars.

I'm sure a few people belly ached over the Talking Heads destroying Take Me To The River...but I like that cover as well. If it's done the same with no artistic expression attached....why bother covering it.

good for you. I didn't like it shoot me.

I'v got no problem with Van Halen I just prefer not to listen to them. I don't consider a prog band, alternative band or anything else as greater or smarter rock than other forms. I like what I like but any band that can make it in the music world impresses me it aint easy so they are doing something right.

I agree also for myself that it's never really one band that influence me either, except in my case I can understand all types of genres

that was my orginal point. I get all genres also doesn't mean I've got to like everything. You say you do good for you.

Belew is a great guy I'm sure he is always listening heck I'm sure he does listen to lots of different syles of music he certainly plays a bunch of types.

some guys can cross over and some guys can't. I'm sure it oes both ways.

I'm sure plenty of people hate that cover like I don't like VH's cover of Pety Women. Tell you truth I like TH cover of Take Me To the River but its way down on my favorite TH song.

Hehehehe Said like a true music lover who abandoned his guitar for a camera..
:oyea: I got rid of my guitar in 1983 and didn't take a picture of a band until 2001. :D

Artististic abilities some times come in all kinds of forms..
But your drawn to music just like the hoard you hang out with..
Simplicity tells me.. You want to achieve or lead.. and be admired for your creations..
It dosn't take a producer out of the realm of needing the necessity to be a creator..
It takes a open mind who knows what the masses wants to see or hear..
Take pictures.. Or play a guitar.. It's art any way you look at it..
wow I like that, nicely put!

I guess I don't see any reason why a band gets ridiculed for doing covers of other bands songs?

Afterall ,they are fans of music they got into/were inspired by too ? I happen to like The Kinks and Roy Orbison..

I also like Van Halen...

I like hearing their versions of great songs and perhaps it's their way of honoring things they like..whats wrong with that?

I've heard some pretty terrible versions of Beatles covers :heheh:

but ehh, MUSIC is Art...which is subject to taste...

don't like the flavor..take yer fork out :****:

Quoted for truth! :grinthumb I'll also add that people have fear of music moving on and they would prefer to live in a time capsule. A band doing a cover in a newer style than the original provokes fear that their music has become left behind though the classics never truly do. Actually these covers that are a tribute to the originals help the original artist stay relevant. People complain about Pearl Jam all the time but they revived the hell out of Neil Youngs career! :grinthumb

This is true..I often have been inspired to check out the original version of a song after hearing a cover..

and I wanted to say I love the Eddie Veddar/ Pearl Jam version of The Beatles

'you got to hide your love away' it one of the best remakes imo..it honors the original but with Ed's vocals it's give it a twist

Aerosmith also did a great cover of 'come together'

It's art ...I mean would you tell Picasso, THERES only ONE way to paint a tree? Certainly not..

why is music different ?
