1939 Ian Hunter (lead singer of Mott the Hoople) is born Ian Hunter Patterson in Shropshire, England, to a Scottish father.

1946 Michael Clarke (original drummer for The Byrds) is born Michael James Dick is born in Spokane, Washington.

1947 T. Rex drummer Mickey Finn is born Michael Norman Finn outside of London, England.

1950 Suzi Quatro is born in Detroit. She makes her musical mark in England, where she moves in 1971 after Mickie Most signs her to his label. In America, she's best known for her role as Leather Tuscadero on the TV series Happy Days.

1952 Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell is born in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1964 Kerry King (guitarist for Slayer) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1970 With the BBC refusing to air The Kinks' new single "Lola" because of its reference to "Coca-Cola" (brand names being a no-no for the corporation), lead singer Ray Davies flies all the way from London to New York to re-record the line as "Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola."

1984 Bruce Springsteen released the album, 'Born In The USA', which became the best-selling album of 1985 in the United States (and also Springsteen's most successful album ever). The album produced a record-tying string of seven Top 10 singles (tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814).

1944 Folk pop singer Michelle Phillips (of The Mamas & The Papas) is born Holly Michelle Gilliam in Long Beach, California.

1945 Gordon Waller (of Peter & Gordon) is born in Braemar, Scotland.

1974 Stefan Lessard (bassist for The Dave Matthews Band) is born in Anaheim, California.

1994 Derek Leckenby (lead guitarist for Herman's Hermits) dies of non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 51.

1996 Metallica release Load, their first album in five years.

1997 Ronnie Lane (bass guitarist of The Small Faces, The Faces) dies at age 51 after a 21-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

2013 Joey Covington (drummer for Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) dies in a single-vehicle accident in Palm Springs, California, at age 67.

2002 Dee Dee Ramone, (Douglas Glenn Colvin), bass guitarist with the Ramones died at his Hollywood, California apartment of a heroin overdose aged 49. He was the group's primary songwriter, penning songs such as 'Rockaway Beach', '53rd & 3rd', and 'Poison Heart'.

1959 Bob Zimmerman graduated from high school in Hibbing, Minnesota. Zimmerman was known as a greaser to classmates in the remote rural community because of his long sideburns and leather jacket. Soon, Zimmerman would be performing at coffee houses at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and later in Greenwich Village in New York City. He would also change his name to Bob Dylan.

U2 perform at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. It's raining and foggy which only adds to the atmosphere. The show is filmed and recorded, with tracks appearing on the EP "Under A Blood Red Sky." 1983

Metallica’s “St. Anger” drops. Produced by Bob Rock, the group’s eighth album was recorded after frontman James Hetfield had just returned from an extended stay in rehab. It debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 and goes on to sell nearly six million copies worldwide. 2003
