1973 - The Summer Jam rock festival took place in Watkins Glen, NY. About 600,000 people watched the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and The Band perform. The event received a Guinness Book of World Records entry for "Largest audience at a pop festival."

1979 - The World Series of Rock was held at Cleveland Stadium, with Journey, Ted Nugent and Thin Lizzy.

1969, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Nice, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After, Taste, The Liverpool Scene and Chicken Shack all appeared at The Bath Festival of Blues in England, with DJ John Peel. Tickets cost 18/6. The festival proved very popular, selling out all 30,000 tickets in the first week, surprising both the townsfolk and the promoters. The only major problem occurred when the Nice's use of bagpipers caused the stage to collapse.

2012, Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe was arrested before the band's scheduled show at Prague's Hard Rock Cage and charged with manslaughter. The incident from which Blythe was charged reportedly took place in 2010 at the band's show at Club Abaton, in Prague. According to reports, a fan jumped up on the stage where a tussle ensued in which the fan was injured. The fan later died, reportedly as a result of those injuries.

1945 David Knights (original bass guitarist for Procol Harum) is born in Islington, North London, England.

1978 The C.W. McCall hit "Convoy" is adapted into a movie of the same name, which opens in theaters. Kris Kristofferson plays the main character, a trucker who goes by "Rubber Duck."

1968, A free concert was held in London's Hyde Park with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Roy Harper. This afternoon concert was the first free festival to be held in Hyde Park. The concert was held to coincide with the release of Pink Floyd's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets.

1979, American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Lowell George died of a heart attack. The Little Feat front man was found dead at the Key Bridge Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. George joined Zappa's Mothers of Invention as rhythm guitarist in 1968, played guitar on John Cale's 1973 album Paris 1919, Harry Nilsson's Son of Schmilsson album and Jackson Browne's The Pretender.

1943 Roger Spear (multi-instrumentalist of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band) is born in Hammersmith, London, England.

1948 Ian Paice, Deep Purple's drummer and founding member, is born in Nottingham, England.

1978 Peter Frampton gets in a bad car accident in the Bahamas, breaking his arm and suffering internal injuries. On the bright side, he gets to miss the premiere of the film he starred in, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which is derided by critics and anyone unfortunate enough to see it.

2004 Rush release their 18th studio album, Feedback, comprised of eight cover songs selected from tunes that influenced each band member in their younger years.

2007 George McCorkle, guitarist for The Marshall Tucker Band and composer of their hit "Fire On The Mountain," dies at age 59 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.

1973, Slade were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Skweeze Me Pleeze Me', the group's fifth UK No.1 and second single to enter the chart at No.1.

1977, Marvel Comics launched a comic book based on the rock group KISS

2000, Eight men were trampled to death during Pearl Jam's performance at The Roskilde festival, near Copenhagen. Police said the victims had all slipped or fallen in the mud in front of the stage.
