Huge new reissue coming in November

Following Pete Townshend's announcement earlier in the week that the Who will tour Quadrophenia in 2012 comes the news that a bumper new reissue package will be released in a couple of months.

The new "Director's Cut" version of Quadrophenia will feature a re-master of the original double album, Pete Townshend's previously unheard demos including songs that didn't make it onto the original album, an exclusive eight track 5.1 sound DVD, a deluxe hard-back book, previously unseen personal notes, photographs, memorabilia and other exclusive material that will be announced over the coming months.

"This 2011 revisit to The Who's 1973 Quadrophenia recording is inspired by current and continuing interest in the project," explains Townshend. "The Who performed a concert version of the piece at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010 for the Teenage Cancer Trust with excellent reviews, and the success of that event led to the prospect of a Who tour in 2012 based on the album. The last such tour was between 1996-1997."

Quadrophenia: The Director's Cut is released on 14 November.

To accompany the box set, double vinyl, 2-disc digi-pak and digital versions will also be released.

I already have three versions of Quadrophenia, the original CD, the glorious MFSL remastered CD, and a HQ vinyl rip. I have all the Quad I need, these never ending box sets are so obviously just an attempt to make more money it's become a joke to me anyway.

I have not changed my view on most of the "bonus material" being rubbish, only true hard core fanatics would want to listen to outtakes and demos, I prefer the songs after they've been polished and that is never going to change. The only nice touch about this set, is the Vinyl album being released again, although they should get one of the audiophile labels to do that for them.

I agree with you to a point. Like you say, it's definitely more for the diehards. But, I think a lot of these packages are for the fans. They have all this extra material, and that can be pretty interesting for the fans. Now, these endless Greatest Hits compilations, those are definitely an attempt to make money. But I think some of these re-releases actually are for the fans and not always just to make money.

You might have the right of it, that serious collectors will enjoy endless re-issues of old classics, but for me it's just gone to the absurd now.

I would be interested if MFSL or Rhino or Classic are the companies doing the updated Vinyl release...otherwise the improvement in yet another remaster doesn't interest me. A 5.1 DVD cut of the album might be nice, but not bits and pieces and other miscellaneous stuff they are throwing in the set.

Oh well, for die hard Who fans they'll enjoy it I'm sure.

Me, I'll play the Quadrophenia I have now and be happy with it.
