Dream Theater, closely followed by Shadow Gallery, although I have never thought of either as progessive metal. I voted for DT because I like them, but purists would probably go for POS or Riverside as prime exponents(?)

Fates Warnng seem pretty good, but I have never heard Opeth in my life!

Plenty in there I love but for me its Opeth with their unique sound and just generally perfect flow to their music. Love every album they have ever released. Dream Theater don't even touch Opeth, not even close to being as great.

This one is tough, really tough. I consider quite a few of the bands on this list among my favourite metal bands, but ultimately I think you have to give the crown to Dream Theater.
