Dream Theater just gets my vote. Such a polarizing band. It seems almost every time a prog/metal band or album is reviewed it is in some way compared to DT. They are the 'benchmark' of the prog/metal genres.

I did include Riverside in the poll but I consider them more heavy prog with elements of prog/metal. Like electric funeral stated earlier Second Life Syndrome is fantastic.

I have trouble digesting 'cookie monster' vocals but Opeth's music is A-1.
How about this supergroup: Mikael Akerfeldt, Steven Wilson, and Mike Portnoy.

The Human Equation by Ayreon is one best prog/metal releases IMO.

Some of you might be asking, Mastodon, a prog/metal artist. IMO, absolutely. Progressive sludge metal.

Ayreon for me, it has to be the ultimate in concept albums and the production/songwriting/musicianship on every album is excellent.

I love the fact this band is a mash up of members from the USA, Germany, and Norway. Excellent work, although I wouldn't really classify them as true prog metal, even though they have been more prog in recent years. I like the fact they resemble Hammerfall :grinthumb

I also am a big fan of Ayreon, too. This was not an easy choice to make.
