In the end though....Sean got the bigger end of the deal no doubt and though it's more of an issue about love than it is money...Julian is doing ok financially...outside of the emotional end of things, physically he didn't have to struggle like the average person.
When he was born the Beatles had just hit big as well. The touring began and this was John's source of income. Cynthia he married due to the fact that she was pregnant and he was never really "in love" with her...or at least that's how I've always seen it.
Not that it condones any sort of behaviour in regards to your child cause it doesn't.
He loved him...I think after the divorce and the move in '68 it was uneasy...that doesn't make it right again. He moved from London to New York. Divorce is not a pretty thing, not even among celebrities.
