Geoff Emerick's memoir as their main recording engineer paints a slightly less than flattering picture of George as a guitarist. He maintains that George was frequently nervous when called on to solo, and that it often took many takes to get it right.

In George's defense, many people have painted Emerick as being squarely in Paul's corner when it came to any Beatle controversies, so it's difficult to say what the objective truth is or whether Emerick had any kind of axe to grind in writing his book (he also claimed Ringo hated drum solos and had to be forced to do the solo near the end of side 2 of Abbey Road). Even so, it's a fun, fun read and never fails to be interesting.

Jeffrey:

What a lot of people forget is that The Beatles, together with offshore radio, changed the face of music here in the UK. Before they came along it was a drab old country with the BBC Light programme allowing us baby boomers two hours of pop music a week and the rest was earnest but humdrum radio with just a nod to the younger generation. All we really only had was Radio Luxemburg for a few hours in the evening providing the musicthat we were really interested in. The Beatles, and their contemporaries, together with the pirate stations changed all that forever.

Good point!

I suppose I was lucky in that my first ever concert was the Beatles in 1963 and I still have the flyer and the programme:)

You are lucky indeed!

There are not too many bands that I am always in the mood for playing but The Beatles I can put on anytime and enjoy.

When choosing traveling music for any road trip that includes me and my wife, I know I can pack any or all Beatles and we'll be good.

Actually our tastes are pretty similar except when it comes to Neil Young & Bruce Cockburn (me) and Barbra Streisand (her). Otherwise we're pretty much in synch.

Hey Jude is a great compilation, but I don't think it has anything that doesn't appear on one or the other of the Past Masters discs.

Even so, I'm still hanging on to my LP copy. :D

I don't play Hey Jude very often, the music is good but I find the lyrics a little too repetitive. I don't own the LP either, but have the song on the compilation disc.:D

I have Hey Jude on mini LP CD Japaneses Import .I used to have it on vinyl as a kid. I always thought that it was an official US issue until I went to buy it on CD and had to hunt it down as an import.

I have Abbey Road on disc, so that's the only Beatles album I actually "own".

I have, however, "borrowed" songs from all the other Beatles cds using the "friends and family" network to compile six "best of" Beatle cds. :D
