Stealing this idea from Khor1255. Heheheh..

If you had to filter the Beatles' 1968 'White Album' to just one disc, how would you go about it?

This is my own tracklist:

1: Back In The USSR
2: Dear Prudence
3: Glass Onion
4: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5: Happiness Is A Warm Gun
6: Martha My Dear
7: Blackbird
8: Why Don't We Do It In The Road?
9: Birthday
10: Sexie Sadie
11: Helter Skelter
12: Long, Long, Long
13: Revolution 1

I understand that part of the appeal of the White Album is of the wide range of material. This question is strictly hypothetical.

Thanks buddy! I had intended on doing others if there was enough interest in the first one but I'd like to have a go at this one. I think it would be helpful if you provided run times so we could make a c40 min album or even 2 20 minute album sides:

1. "Back in the U.S.S.R." 2:43
2. "Dear Prudence" 3:56
3. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" 4:45
4. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" 2:43
5. "Blackbird" 2:18
6. "Yer Blues" 4:01
7. "Mother Nature's Son" 2:48
8. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" 2:24
9. "Sexy Sadie" 3:15
10. "Helter Skelter" 4:29
11. "Long, Long, Long" 3:04
12. "Savoy Truffle" 2:54
13. "Cry Baby Cry" 3:02

My least favourite songs on the White Album are Wild Honey Pie, Don't Pass Me By, Birthday and Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey. I think that is too few to fit the whole album into a single disc. No way. Can't do it.

I like the White Album for the variety of music it offers and the quality of the music too obviously. I enjoy it immensely including even Revolution 9. Great stuff!

For me, I think that the White Album is one of the most overrated albums of all time. I typically don't talk about it because there still is some very good stuff on it, but I really think that the band was at the height of their own self-importance and were on a major-league narcissistic trip for the ages. In my mind, I really believe that they sat around, whether it was together as a foursome or individually and said that they were SO great and so untouchable that they could put down just about anything in the recording studio and it would still be solid gold. Tracks like Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9 prove this. There is a LOT of 'filler' and a lot of fluffy that I have to weed through to get to the meat and potatoes of this album, aside from the first side which is easily the best of the four sides.

Revolution 1 is ok, but I much prefer the Hey Jude b-side release that came out a year or so later (if memory serves me correctly).

In no particular order (other than appearance on the original release)

  • Back In The USSR
  • Dear Prudence
  • Glass Onion
  • Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
  • While My Guitar Gently Weeps
  • Birthday
  • Helter Skelter
  • Revolution 1
  • Savoy Truffle

If i needed to add some 'filler' to top off the album, I could be persuaded to add Yer Blues if needed.

Had a go at this a while ago (basically picking ones' favourite tracks / ditching the ones you think are 'rubbish'!):

Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness is a Warm Gun
I'm So Tired
Blackbird
Piggies
Don't Pass Me By
Birthday
Yer Blues
Everybody's Got Something to Hide...
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Long, Long, Long
Revolution 1
Cry Baby Cry

Nb. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is my most ditched track!!

Bit of a long (vinyl) single album (~27 mins per side) - Blackbird would probably get ditched next (mostly cos of the bird song on it!); then Piggies.... (then it's less than 25 mins per side, which is OK?). Agree totally with Lynch about Revolution 1. No re-ordering of the tracks - too much hard work!

It's a pity they weren't still engaging with each other (& George Martin) as a band to realise some of these songs more fully.
