The Velvet Underground: They're pure genius. One of my favourite bands, and their innovation is just so important in everything that is rock music. I know they're also pretty legendary, but that is with people that are into Rock Music and have the slightest idea of its history. But for a common person, its an unknown band. They should be just as famous as Led Zeppelin in my opinion.
The Smiths: Another legendary band for people that are used to talking about rock music. But at least where I live, they're not at all famous. Maybe Morrissey might be a familiar name, but because of his solo career.
Yes!! I loved the Velvets before "Juno" came out and a bunch of "hipsters" jumped on that shit like they discovered it first. Lou Reed is brilliant; I love Nico, not necessarily because she has the prettiest voice (she was tone deaf, literally) but because she just "fit" in with the group. I couldn't even explain how they sound to someone who's never heard them before. They're just something you have to experience firsthand. How they didn't catch on is completely beyond me, but maybe it's best that they remain "underground" - so there's not a bunch of nuts claiming fandom over 1 or 2 songs they know.
Also, I positively adore The Smiths. Morrissey's lyrics are full of dark humour and melancholy beauty. Everything stops when he sings. At least, it does in my world. They haven't yet made it to my record collection due to lack of funds, but ... oh, I wish Morrissey would serenade me. I'd probably die. Some of his stuff with the Smiths was actually considerably catchy. As with the Velvets, I have no idea how they never get as much praise as any other similar band from their era - not that the Smiths can really be compared to anything going on in the 80s. Not even close.
Okay, I'm done with my girlish tirade now.
