Oh definitely. I think each one of those albums had at least 2 songs that had the word "love" in the title or at least it seems like it. But yeah, they definitely were headed down a more poppy road even by the time they recorded Diver Down. 1984 is riddled with happier, poppy radio tracks as well. Far more than the first 4 albums. Doesn't make any of it bad, but it was a change in direction for the band by '82 already, at least in my honest opinion.

Listened to a few Sammy albums tonight. I kind of forgot how good Three Lock Box was, as well as VOA and Standing Hampton. Not just the radio hits, but the other deeper cuts, some VERY good shit on these.

The one that sticks out at me right now the most as just a kickass track that never saw the light of day (on the radio), Rise of the Animal on TLB.

Ok, I think Montrose has been mentioned in about 33% of the posts, but wasn't Hagar with Montrose on just the first two albums? And although he's credited for about half of the songwriting, he's not credited as a guitarist on any song -- just vocals. So that's why I didn't think including Montrose to this poll was a fair comparison to his solo career or his tenure in Van Halen (where he not only wrote or co-wrote lyrics and music but also played guitar and sang).

Montrose's first album is one of the greats from the 70's, for sure, but I would save that for comparison to any one of Sammy's or Van Hagar's albums. Hmm, maybe I will do that next. Montrose S/T vs VH F.U.C.K.?
