I see there's White Metal too ie Christian metal. I think there must be a '50 shades of grey metal' joke in there somewhere :D

Hard rock? Yes

Heavy metal? Yes. In my opinion, they are the TRUE grandfathers of heavy metal.

Death metal? Not in a million years.

Their influence on most metal that came after them is undeniable.

If you read this you'll get an overview of what the genres are, who started which, how they've evolved and the history.

Short answer: Black Sabbath was considered Hard Rock, the drummer called their music "downer rock", which term was replaced by Heavy Metal. The first Heavy Metal bands are considered to be Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

If you don't consider Black Sabbath heavy metal you have no idea what heavy metal is. There is no nicer way to put that.

Yes, I have always thought of Black Sabbath as the definition of heavy metal. The first band i think of when i hear the term.
