I was big into instrumental guitar rock back in the mid 80's after hearing YJMalmsteen's debut and then the onslaught of Schrapnel Records releases (MacAlpine, Taffola, V.Moore, etc...). Then I sat on those for more than a decade until a friend played me "Crystal Planet" by Satch and it blew me away. I realized that there was more to that genre than just shredding, that melody and songwriting were possible. I went out and got all of Satch's stuff, including G3Live which introduced me to Eric Johnson and Steve Vai's music as well. I was really into the genre until about 4 years ago. I dont buy much of it anymore, except for Satch and EJ here and there. I'm kinda bored with it now, it seems like everybody and their brother has a shred album out these days. But I still love the classics, mostly Satch.
