The Eagles had Joe Walsh to revitalize them in their second half
The Greateful Dead had songs that meandered on and on forever in concert

The Eagles with a 2nd round knockout

If AT&T or Pepsi decided to "get into the rock and roll thing" they would create the eagles.
Vanilla music.
Corporate safe bland ... choose your non expletive.
While rock and roll was kicking out the walls the eagles were doormen inviting in the guys from the local country club.

The Dead ....
Well they did what they did and didn't really care if you liked it or not.
The house band at the electric cool aide acid tests.
For real.
Record companies and radio never embraced them and they did not give half a shit.
They went on to be the biggest touring band for decades.
They atracted a following with more loyalty than any act ever in history.
People created their identity around being fans of the dead.
They changed their lives to be able to follow the band around.
They were unlike any other band ever.
And they played great music. Live.
Like a living thing that took shape in the moment.
There has never been any other band like the Dead.
It is futile to compare them to any other band.
And I reiterate "I had a tough night and I hate the ******* eagles man!"

I saw picture recently of Ritchie Blackmore of Rainbow circa 1979 wearing either a T-shirt or a sweat shirt that reading on the front-

IF THE GRATEFUL DEAD

And the great thing about the dead is that every ******* one of them would have loved that t shirt.
They were the single most self deprecating band ever.
When someone asked them about "staying true to the music" Jerry said.
"We tried to sell out but nobody was buying"
