I didn't know/realize that was a Tom Waits song. I've always thought it was the Eagles that wrote it (just an assumption since they wrote the majority of their songs). Love that track! :)

Not always.
Take it easy was mostly Jackson Brown. He wrote or co-wrote a number of things early on.
And a fairly large number of their songs are co-written with J.D. Souther.
Already Gone was a cover. Jack Tempchin
Peaceful Easy Feeling cover. Jack Tempchin
Heartache Tonight collaboration with Bob Seger and J. D. Souther

But I'm not criticizing.
In the context of this thread you have to notice that Jerry wrote with Robert Hunter and Bob wrote with John Perry Barlow.
I'm not aware of any dead songs that either wrote on their own.

But I will go on record and say that Robert Hunter is one of the very best lyricists in the world. Just endlessly compelling lyrics. They get in your head and won't stop.

And they still are great as Dead and Company

They are both playing Orlando's Camping World Stadium soon. I only bought tix for the Eagles so there's your answer, although I like both bands.

Don't shoot the messenger
I actually don't hate the Eagles. Well maybe a bit.
More about what they didn't do then what they did which I generally find the yuppie version of elevator music. I can't even manage to hate it.
To me they would be the musical equivalent of Leroy Neiman the artist.

They make nice unchallenging pictures that appeal to the tastes of the time and come in just under the wire of being "art". And they sell way more than any other "real" artists of the time.

But wow, no band engenders more genuine hate.

Grateful Dead.
I love some songs by Eagles, especially the second awesome album Desperado, but the jams of The Deads often influenced by jazz music make them greater.
