i suppose this is an old guy talking when i say a huge majority ofl the girl singers i hear tend to sound the same.
but its true!
i personally haven't heard any female singer who is unique in the same way bjork is, for example. you know its her straight away, don't you?

i was listening to this old rock n roller in an interview a few months back[cant recall his name] and he said there is a big difference between then and now.
back then a record company would sign an artist for the long haul.
they knew she'd mature over the next few yrs and that they probably wouldn't make any money from her 'til her 3rd lp.
doesnt apply only to female artists of course.

it wasn't so much about NOW!
image wasn't the major thing, the music was.
back then of course, we didn't see a plethora of pictures of the groups we liked.
thats because the places to see pics weren't so prevalent as there are today. so my friends and i couldn't really of cared less what our favourite singers looked like. there wasn't that emphasis like today.

getting back to female artists.
why is it that so many of them feel they have to make sexual videos? are they told thats the only way they can make a video? only if they are filmed thrusting their hips back and forth, while wearing sexy clothing?
almost every video i've looked at over the last few yrs have been like that, its so blatant at times.
i'm so surprized that the female artists consent to go ahead with this backward step.
its all about showing themselves as sexual objects, so many women fought against this in the past.

there is another type of video actually. its often part of the above videos or stands on its own.
its when the woman is shown to be aggressive towards the men in the film. acting like they couldn't care less about the guys. i always get the impression that a lot of the women are acting like some of the men did in the past.
they somehow think this is the way to go. they don't realize that the way men portrayed themselves in the past wasn't a good look.
women, you don't have to act like men, they are not the template.

Thus the reason I love Adele so much. She is conservative, and has said that she would rather be appreciated for her voice than what she wears and looks like.

Get ready cause I'm about to go off on a rant...

Where to start? First of all, I agree with everything you said and one of the biggest pet peeves I have of these women singers is their "attitude." Call it a feminist agenda or whatever but it's highly annoying and I can't relate to these songs at all or to them because they all sound like puppets. Whether they're acting sexy or acting like users of men, it's not winning me over. And it's been a tired act for quite awhile now.

Aside from the attitude, the music is horrible. It seems most of these girls today are only interested in looking sexy for their fans while the music is merely an afterthought. You and I might think it's crap but these girls are so deluded, they actually believe their music is good. Most of them are completely talentless and look like they sold their soul to the devil just to be on the radio.

Which brings me to Clear Channel...AKA, the devil. Here's a great reason for the regulation of the music industry and why one company shouldn't have a monopoly on radio stations. They have removed all the "music people" from the higher positions in the industry and replaced them with bean counters.

The music industry is doing the same thing to the American public as the film industry which is to give people as few choices as possible and then give them a steady diet of that for years to come. Putting out the same product over and over is a cheap way to keep profits rolling in without having to take unnecessary risks on signing bands that sound different than what's currently on the radio.

At any rate, people continue to buy the crap that's out there. Because if they didn't, the record industry would've already died and all of these horrible female acts along with them.

Karen O doesnt do that. Shes more an artistic punk rocker. The artists who need to be provocative and look stunning every time they walk outside are the ones who dont understand what they sing about. Sexuality sells in this day in age. People tend to not listen to music that is composed and performed by one creative mind. Its better to listen to music everyone has heard, everyone likes, created for the sole purposes of being catchy and popular in order to sell. Thats why I like karen O its not about all that. Its the creation she enjoys, not promoting an album and trying to look like a barbie in her videos. respect <3

I like alot of female singers today. Mainly from metal bands like NIGHTWISH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, LEAVES EYES....list is pretty endless.

Not all the solo artists and pop female artists are bad, but I usually make a joke (that may very well be tiresome now) that many female singers today all sound like a cross between Melanie and Stevie Nicks but have more R & B appiled.

Lisa Hannigan
(No beauty screams modesty like Lisa Hannigan! She has the most beautiful soothing tone and as a companion to Damien Rice she supplied gorgeous angelic harmonies and an uplifting spiritual presence!)

Dead Sara
Stated by past vocal powerhouse Grace Slick to her favorite modern vocalist Emily Armstrong has both the muscle of a hard rock vocal that can change to a sweet cooing in a single note. Great range and control and a stunning unique talent!)

First Aid Kit
(Great pairing of unique dual folk harmonies! These gals are both odd yet enchanting!)

Alabama Shakes
(A soulful, unique vocalist fronts this band and cannot be compared to any other vocalist today!)

Beth Hart
(A Blues filled, ballsy, adrenaline filled female embodiment of Robert Plant! The most sexual artist on the list but no different than the sweat drench hard rockers of past on stage!)

Marketa Irglova
(This songbird used to be paired with Glen Hansard but has freed herself to a solo career! Shades of Sarah McLachlan which is a high accolade as almost no one has shared that stunning, crystalline vocal quality! Also brings out shades of Aimee Mann which shows just how far reaching her range is!)

In This Moment
(The most bipolar vocalist hear is Maria Brink! One song she'll let out the most testosterone laden beast of a song and the next she'll send you to Heaven with the sweetest ballad you'll ever hear! And at her best she'll take you through that Journey in a single song!)

Rachael Yamagata
(This smoky, jazzy vocalist falls into the Fiona camp (the only one here who does) but has her own style as well!)

Those are just a sampling and they are all different female vocalist from 2,000 on that sound different than the last! They are not the sexualized, angry, copycat broads that are ranted about above! You guys are welcome to disagree and own your opinions but I'm definitely not on board with that train of thought! :D

I remembered Lissie after dude but since you mentioned that! :grinthumb

Lissie

It's not about who hears them all but rather an actual example is giving of a wide sweeping perspective. It may just provide one artist someone digs and that's the purpose of a music forum IMO. I also think artists who've had hits ranging from Regina Spektor to Lana Del Rey to Pink all sound different from each other! Granted two of those artist were sexualized but that's the pop spectrum! Pop's always going to be more sex than anything! :heheh: If you are stuck listening to what's fed to you or are jaded from listening further to anything new you aren't going to hear anything good! :)

Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself.

If you were here I'd buy you a beer.
