I dont think gender plays a part in talent or lack of it. That said, Nicole Fiorentino is a god with a bass guitar. If you play bass and youve seen smashing pumpkins live with Nicole in the lineup, you'd see her amazingness just radiates in every note she hits and every chord she plays. She used to play in Veruca salt, bass ad backing vocals after Nina Gordon left. Veruca Salt Kind of like an L7 clone but had far more distortion and apathetic lyrics. Also less feministic.
(Cant post pictures because when i copy the URL it ends up being really long and doesnt link to anything)

Another awesome female bassist is Tal Wilkenfeld. She has played a lot with Jeff Beck and has played with Herbie Hancock. She has had guest appearances with The Allman Brothers & Govt Mule.

Get ready cause I'm about to go off on a rant...

Where to start? First of all, I agree with everything you said and one of the biggest pet peeves I have of these women singers is their "attitude." Call it a feminist agenda or whatever but it's highly annoying and I can't relate to these songs at all or to them because they all sound like puppets. Whether they're acting sexy or acting like users of men, it's not winning me over. And it's been a tired act for quite awhile now.

Aside from the attitude, the music is horrible. It seems most of these girls today are only interested in looking sexy for their fans while the music is merely an afterthought. You and I might think it's crap but these girls are so deluded, they actually believe their music is good. Most of them are completely talentless and look like they sold their soul to the devil just to be on the radio.

Which brings me to Clear Channel...AKA, the devil. Here's a great reason for the regulation of the music industry and why one company shouldn't have a monopoly on radio stations. They have removed all the "music people" from the higher positions in the industry and replaced them with bean counters.

The music industry is doing the same thing to the American public as the film industry which is to give people as few choices as possible and then give them a steady diet of that for years to come. Putting out the same product over and over is a cheap way to keep profits rolling in without having to take unnecessary risks on signing bands that sound different than what's currently on the radio.

At any rate, people continue to buy the crap that's out there. Because if they didn't, the record industry would've already died and all of these horrible female acts along with them.

Totally agree, its because of what the music industry wants to portray.
Coming from Australia we have it possibly worse than anyone else because our mainstream radio is so controlled and has been since it began, the beauty of having such a small population.
On the other hand though our live music scene is thriving, albeit totally dismissed by the music industry and totally unsustainable without the hard working musos that do it for love not money.

There is a string of female fronted rock groups playing around melbourne in particular that would thrive overseas if they had the capability of getting there. One that springs to mind is a band named Fenian who have for some reason dropped off the radar of late but I hear they're coming back.
Seriously check their page out cause I think they deserve more

My youngest daughter really likes this female singer, Birdy she's just 16 years old, & I tend to agree with my daughter from what I've heard she's pretty good.

Here's her version of James Taylor's Fire & Rain:
