In skimming this thread, I didn't see anyone mention King's X - my personal fave.

I liked High Llamas and Guided by Voices and Olivia Tremor Control and some others.
I guess I liked Flaming Lips the most. The 90's for them would be 'in a priest driven ambulance' through 'the soft bulletin' and I've loved each and every one of those records since the day they were new.

There's another 90's band I really loved called The Jesus Lizard. The singer was boderline psychotic but I thought those guys could REALLY cook and didn't sound like anybody else. they started as the decade was new and broke up 97 or 8 so I really think of them as 'a 90s band.
Super Furry Animals made an impression on me in the late 90's same with Tortise. Yo La Tengo kept my interest through the decade! I'm glad they're still at it. I liked the 90's! that's just my pet stuff, I like plenty of more popular stuff too! my only real 'coulda was' was Dandy Warhols. I thought 'Come Down' was gonna mean great things and I'm not sure it did.

borderline? heheheh i remember an interview with the singer from helmet where he mentionned that the singer for the jesus lizard would literally put his balls in a vice on stage.

as for tortoise they freaking rock. i saw the a few years ago in ottawa and it was crazy intense haha. they had one of the coolest stage layouts i've ever seen also, two drumkits in the center but set to face each other instead of the crowd. everything else was set around them in a ring, a marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, baritone guitar, on top of the normal bass, guitar and keyboards. they really lived up to the idea of being rhythmatists.

speaking of tortoise have you ever checked out jaga jazzist? they're an amazing 10 piece from norway. most excellent stuff indeed.

There's hundreds!!! Okay, maybe less :) I grew up in the 90's, and it's only now that I've come to appreciate what a great time for music it was. Back then I was mostly into 60's and 70's, though I had time to get into the 90's stuff as well.

I would go with (in no particular order):

Guns N Roses
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Collective Soul
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Offspring
Blur
Pulp
Alice In Chains

I'm sure there's tons more, but I just can't think clearly at this moment... I'll have to get back to it :)
