My favorites seemed to be the more harder rocking bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains though Oasis had some great tunes as well as Smashing Pumpkins and Bush.

I remember Jars of Clay. I really liked them. K.D. Lang was pretty popular with me too. Love her voice!

Yes. Good call.

Jars of Clay in particular have shown a greater-than-I-expected capacity for artistic growth. I guess because they came from the "contemporary Christian music" sub-genre (which I consider pretty much an artistic ghetto--and I know first hand what I'm talking about here), I had really low expectations. They surprised me, and most pleasantly so. They're a great studio band, a great album band.

Sixpence None The Richer is another 90s band from the "CCM ghetto" that has shown strong creativity and capacity for growth. I think their Divine Discontent project is just shy of a masterpiece.

My own "best bands of the 90s" list would need to include Ben Folds Five and the High Llamas (am I the only one around here who knows of this band's existience?)...

If we can count Phish and the Dave Matthews Band as mainly 90s artists (I think that would be fair enough), they both make my list as well.

I've heard of the High Llamas but I haven't heard anything by them as of yet.
